Help: how to adjust anti skate on rega planar 1

Postby joaopaiva84 » 17 Feb 2018 22:21

Hello guys. I need some Help.
I have a rega planar 1 and I installed an ortofon blue on it. The issue is that the blue tracking force is considerably lower than the mounted cartridge (carbon) and since rega planar 1 does not have anti skating adjustment, the records start skipping close to the near end ( last tracks ). Just to add: tt is leveled and cartridge is aligned with ortofon protractor. Vtf is set to 1.8g ( ortofon blue recommended ). Do you have any tip or anything that helps me solve this issue?

You can't adjust the antiskating on a P1. It's fixed and there is nothing you can do about it.

That said, my brother in law has a P1 with a 2M Blue on it and he has no issues with skipping. I'd check your setup again.

If it track on 1.8 it’s probably the same as the original cartridge. Try 2.0 and see if that helps

Thanks guys. The curious thing is: if I try to adjust VTF anything beyond 1.85-1.90g it starts distorting like crazy. If I set 2.0g (lots of distortion) most of the skips stops. This is curious becausa ortofon blue range is 1.6g-2.0g so I did not expect distortion at 2.0g

I am getting mad with this issue. Really. Not all records but some skips. However all my records are brand new (180g vinyl) and its totally disapointing, I dont know what to do. Everything is aligned, vtf ok but on some records problem continue.

Oi,

very difficult to say what the problem is. Have you inspected the stylus? Is the cantilever straight? Does it ride low at VTF 1.8? Can you upload som pictures when the cartridge is in the groove?

It sounds like an arm issue since the skipping is at the end, but just to be sure, checking the cartridge first.

There are two immediate things regarding tone arm.

Check the cueing device so that it does not touch the arm when playing. If it is too high it might, and perhaps more so at the end of the record. If you play with higher VTF, perhaps this problem gets more serious resulting in higher distortion? Try 1,5 g VTF.

Check so that the tonearm cable under the turntable is not twisted or infer some force on the tonearm movement.

while I was doing this video, I just discovered a bizarre thing. When record start skipping, If a gently blow some air (very gently) on the cartridge direction, it stop skipping. Bizarre. I think its an excess of anti skating.

Is it just the angle, but the stylus goes to the left both in the stationary picture 1 and in the last (playing?). It seems to be the same amount. Since antiskate is on all the time, do you see the same amount of angle when the stylus is not touching the record?

If yes, antiskate is probably correct.
If no, you have too much antiskate. Either there some force due to the cabling or the arm is not calibrated (it should be around 1.75, I've read somewhere...)

However, these kind of "off-center stylii" is something I've seen with Ortofon quite commonly, and may just be your sample that is a bit off-center. You should also try aligning the stylus and not the cartridge. At the moment it seems that you need to realign to get the stylus correct (if now, it is the stylus that is off-center also in its resting position, and not a problem with antiskate).

Check otherwise the arm cueing device so it does not affect the arm, and the cable from the tonearm so it does not exert any forces. I am unfamiliar with this arm so I do not know if the arm cable could be a problem.

Thomas, when the stylus is touching any surface ( either record or protractor ), it slighly goes to the left (as we observed in the pictures). When the stylus is not touching any surface, seems centered to me. I Will take a picture so we can confirm. Do you think it might be an alignament issue? Also as per your suggestion I checked the cueing leveler and tonearm cable and see no issue. Did u see my last message? Isnt strange?

That settles it, antiskate is too much.

You can try controlling the tonearm cable, otherwise you need to put it in to a dealer for check.

To much antiscating and you will get problems like this.
After a little while you will also damage the stylus and it will stay more and more off center.
Happend to me with a Virtuso Wood a while ago.
