Pioneer PL-41 vs. Tannoy Micro Tm33

Post by davebenz1 » 14 Feb 2020 22:40

I think I already know the answer to this question - but I'll ask anyway. I just spotted a Pioneer PL-41 on CL. What's I great looking TT. So is it in the same ballpark as my Tannoy? I know it doesn't have anti-skating which is a bit of a drawback. Would I be nuts to give up one for the other?

If the PL 41 has the auto return function, be aware that it has an unusual mechanism with some sort of sealed in a can damped coil spring. When it works, it's fine, but its not the easiest thing to repair or even to diagnose. You can, of course just use it as a manual if the mechanism is troubled.
And the thrust bearing may need to be replaced - easily available on Ebay, but an added expense.
Otherwise, I think it might be a better table, though with less fully featured arm. I have the later model with antiskating, and I have been impressed by the build quality - the platter shows no variation at all as it rotates, which shouldn't be rare, but is.
Both tables look nice, but in different aesthetic modes, and tastes differ.
