Orange is the New Black...

Post by j_nienaber » 06 Mar 2019 03:17

...At least translucent orange in this case. This is my very old TD 160, rebuilt several times over the years (using parts from 2 different TD 160 turntables actually) and currently running a Denon 103R cartridge in a Rega R200 arm. I was searching for a Denon MC step-up transformer on Amazon on Friday afternoon when it popped a suggestion for coloured, translucent acrylic turntable platter mats from Hudson HiFi in New York City - available in several colours. I just could not help myself - had to have one (and yes it works great - at least as good as my old black rubber mat!). Originally I planned to use a white felt underlay to hide the "industrial" look of the platter but the bizarre look somehow grew on me!

* Original plinth sanded down to the MDF and then redone with Ash veneer (Gorilla Glue bonded to the MDF)
* Low-time motor bought online (but might be replaced by a DC speed-controlled motor some time in the future)
* Inner and outer platters polished every 6 months or so with Mother's Mag and Chrome Polish (no not my mother's - it is a brand sold by Hot Rod and custom car suppliers in North America, MUCH better than household metal polishes)
* Plinth cover from an old EDS turntable I found in a community store, just so happened that the cover fits perfectly on
top so it was "donated" to the Thorens)

Forgot to mention that the plinth is internally lined with Dynamat (none on the chassis or sub-chassis though) and that the veneered exterior have 4 or 5 layers of polyurethane varnish sanded down between layers, & the final layer sprayed on. The Rega arm was rewired and is a better match for the Denon 103R than any of my SME arms... Running the risk of getting Hate Mail for saying this but I consider ye olde R200 as good as or better than most sub-$1000 pickup arms for handling heavy & clunky cartridges.

The translucent platter mat looked just as disconcerting to me at first but like I say, it "grew" on me. about the only reservation I now have is if I should rather have chosen a yellow mat :).

The apparent 'blotches' visible in this pic are reflections and shadows on the polished platter.

It's nice to a standard deck with a bit of patina

Just started this hobby.

I have a pretty original Thorens TD150 MKII with a complete TP-13A arm (were I live pretty hard to come by).
the only thing I have done so far is cleaned the main bearing and polished the platter. that took some time..

It has a Pickering Cartridge that seems to work great, however I will probably update it in sometime.

The plinth is in the making and I'm very pumped for that to arrive.

160B mkII not done too much with it, new lid , new base and feet, brought an earth terminal out to the rear and fitted an Audio Origami Rega arm, sounding good just need to polish outside of the platter a bit sometime
