TD-203 record clamp?

Post by Ripvanvinyl » 14 Dec 2019 05:12

Is it advisable on such a lightweight deck? Does it make a difference?

After adding a cork and rubber platter mat- great improvement in sound quality especially for chamber and acoustic music IMO- I am up for further experimentation.

I use a record clamp, for Tonar. Not a weight, but one that screws on. The theory behind clamps/weights is to press down the record on the mat/platter, reducing the air between the record and mat/platter and transfer energy/heat when playing down on the mat/platter. I would say it improves the sound a little bit.

How much does your clamp weigh Raphael?

Almost nothing, 80 g so it works on all turntables even those with suspension. Clamps usually weights very little since the put force on the record by pressure, the downforce, they are screwed down on the platter. So a different principle than heavy weights.

Thanks! I'll see if I can come up with a suitable alternative locally (meaning I'm pretty cheap when it comes to purchasing gear). :)

Yes, I admit that I didn't got the cheapest one. :) There are indeed many less expensive options available, from Michell, Pro-Ject and many others.
