My first Thorens TD 318

Post by jhouse55 » 03 Dec 2019 04:00

Hello,
I just bought a TD 318 in great shape. Dont know alot about these but owner provided the dead original Thorens AC adapter, but also provided one he purchased.

Looks like felt feet? I will search the forum, but any advice on this model? I’m a big fan of the TD 165 but i’ll be there eventually.

Thanks in advance,

That all looks nice and tidy!

The TD318 is a very competant turntable and with careful cartridge selection the fitted TP11 MkIV can really sing.

The 1A power supply is a good enhancement over the stock Thorens PSU, so the original owner made a good choice there.

I hope it all works well for you,

Steph

I second 'StephDale' view on the original Thorens PSUs and would even upgrade to a bigger'N'heavier one if I'd were to keep the turntable and/or it's16 volts motor. Which BTW has nothing to shy away from the main voltages ones.

Thorens switch to 16 volts motor was purely for production ease and likely cost savings in regard of international voltages and exportations. Pursuing earlier model of Thorens turntables like a TD165 for example is another matter.

Hi Jhouse55,
Congratulations :-) .
I recently bought a 321 (similar to your 318 I believe) and have been reading as much as I can about the deck.

I levelled the device and then the platter. Checked the cartridge alignment with the stupid protractor available in the tools section here at VE.
Had a look over it in general and that was about all that was needed. It has been giving me great music since.

There does not seem to be too much more information online about these decks, once the first few pages of google results have been read through. However, what I have read is very favourable indeed.

Enjoy.

Add to my post above, I forgot to mention that i checked and reset the anti-skate and tracking force as well - the manuals are generally available on this site so you can read and reference the correct process and settings.
