What to check and look out for when buying a 150 mk II?

Post by T68 » 18 Oct 2019 07:40

Hi guys!
Helping out a friend who's looking at buying a vintage turntable. One prospect is a Thorens 150 mkII.
Being more of a Dual and Garrard guy (and lately also a Lenco) I would appreciate any input on what to check before parting whith hard earned money on this guy.
Speaking of which: in what price realm would a working but not pristine 150 be?
Thanks in advance for any help here!

Make sure it's all there. Headshells and tonearm parts are expensive. 45 adaptor less so. Dust cover is a bonus even if cracked.
Make sure the motor runs true and in the right direction. Without any knocking etc.
Bearings are usually fine.
Don't worry if it smells a bit when first powered up if it's not been used in a while, it's just the resistor.
It will probably need a new belt and a bit of a clean.
Price wise check sold listings on that big online auction site, but they do seem to be very good value for money.

I would not pay more than 120-130 pounds for a well cared for example in stock condition.
Recently the prices went higher. Tried to buy one for a friend to be restored but couldn't managed to find one under 150 in questionable condition.
The modified versions (custom plinth, arm-board, face-plate and new tonearm) are usually going (depending on the tonearm installed) over 600-700 GBP.
