TD165 45 Adaptor

Post by Foamy » 30 Sep 2019 11:02

Hi All
Does anyone know of anybody knocking out the little plastic adaptor for the centre of the TD165 resin platter to enable the playing of a 45 and use of the original Thorens platter mat?

I see a few original ones here and there on line but either the adaptor price is wild or the postage to send to New Zealand is enough to probably get it to Mars.

Happy to pay anyone turning these out on a 3D printer a good price!

Thanks

Those for sale are rarer than hen's teeth.

I would suggest the you jut get an inexpensive (plastic) universal 45 adapter that you can most likely only use when playing 45s.

I say "plastic" as the original was plastic but, more importantly, the Throrens spindle is just a hair bigger than usual.
It's much easier to ream out a plastic 45 adapter slightly than a metal one . :)

What you say makes perfect sense but I just couldn't resist trying to find a real one (or a perfect copy) after returning what was a very clean TD165 back to even more original condition.
So I stumped up for an original from the Netherlands, US$25. What I liked about the seller (besides his perfect feedback and Thorens background) was the fact that he didn't try to make out sending this tiny item half way around the world would be another $25-30 like every other seller is doing. US$3 gets it here as you should expect for something that small and light. Found an original platter mat for US$20 locally so all set now, mat and puck can be united soon :-)

Cheers.

If you want to use the original platter, you need the original 45 adapter. Thorens cleaverly made an adapter that fit flat in the platter mat big central hole for 33 and goes for 45 when you reverse it. So you never look for it.

By the way, what do you mean by "the thorens spindle is just a hair bigger than usual"? I noticed that on my 166, but not on my 160 super. What is the norm, 7 mm diameter?

Hi, I had a couple printed and think I have a spare, if I can find it.
They are not exact copies as I did not have one to copy. From the top it looks like the standard version and on the bottom it has a couterbore to fit in the resin hub. Fit is good, finish is okay and it's black. Let me know if your interested and I'll try to find & take some pictures to post.

Yes, as I alluded to, a universal adapter will not wok when playing an LP.

BTW, I tried the 45 adapter from my Pioneer 112 D (my back up TT) as it appears to be nothing special......it's just like a universal one .
It woks great for 45s.:)

Quite bizarre how many TT’s are without it when it sat comfortably in the platter like it does. But then again my TD165 was bought pretty clean off the original owner from the 70’s and the 45 puck and Thorens mat were no longer there. I guess maybe when people opted for a new fancy platter mat as the TT aged a bit the puck got moved to the junk drawer/cupboard and went from there to landfill. Some nice turned aluminium ones around but again the postage is absurd if you do want to invest in the actual part itself.
