TD 290 MK II drive belt issues

Post by Ozzyisgod » 01 Sep 2019 22:00

Hello Everyone,

Purchased this back when released but continually have to replace the drive belt. Normally, the belt would stay on and start at 33 or 45 rpm but now won’t rotate the platter before popping off! Am I missing that there’s a tensioner someplace where I need to make an adjustment?

Thanks in advance

The belt drive is similar to the TD280 that I have, and I've had no issues. Belt only slipping off when worn after some years, not when new. Maybe the drive pulley has got knocked in some way so it's not giving the right tension. I would take the turntable to service and see if they could find the issue.

Does the 290 have a 2-piece platter like the "classic" Thorens tables? If so, just turn the outer platter upside-down so you can see the belt and perhaps get an idea what is happening.

There has been two designs of the TD290. One has has a similar construction as my TD280 with a 2-piece platter where the belt drives the inner subplatter. If one removes the outer platter one can see the belt. The other design is the subplatter under the main platter, same platter as the TD295.

The 290 Mk II has the subplatter under the main platter. It was the first generation that had the construction with inner and outer platter.
