Problem fitting cartridge on TP 16MK3 tonearm

Post by Boyan1984 » 22 May 2019 20:14

Hello!
I just got a very nice TD320 with TP16MK3 tonearm. There was an ELAC D796 H30 cartridge mounted, but I removed it in order to mount my own Audio Technica AT 440Mla.
And God help me, it is impossible to mount any cartridge on this tonearm. Tried for hours without success.
I've read that many people have tried this cartridge (AT440Mla), but no one says how they did it, so I will be thankful to anyone who knows how to do it.
I'm really desperate as I really wanted this turntable and now I can't listen to it.
Cheers everyone!

What's the hangup?
The screws too short?
I've included a spacer on my TP63 for proper VTA but all goes together fine.

The screws are a bit shorter, especially for the ELAC, but my dad managed to fit the Audio Technica. What spacer are you talking about?

The screws are 2mm and can be bought online or at a hardware store.
You may need to trim them to the proper length.

Thorens TTs came with a spacer kit but you can also find them online or make out of a light weight material like balsa wood.

My dad managed to fit the Audio Technica and it came perfect. Yeah, I just learned about them screws....will have to buy a set of different ones for different carts. The spacer kit I have, but without the beefier one in the mniddle as on your pic.
Now it's time to set the VTA and VTF and everything else right :D
I read that for my turntable the TD320 MK1 the distance between the stylus tip and the vinyl should be 5-6 mm.

I didn't know about that distance.

I try to level the cartridge body to the record surface but that doesn't always do it either.
Sometimes you need to try a couple of different adjustments and find the right spot by ear.
The AT440 MLa can be a bit bright, which may be tamed with VTA.

Just keep in mind the more you play around with the alignment the better you get at it.
It can feel frustrating at first.

I'll be changing the bearing oil, how much should I put? I've ordered the exact for my table, it is a 30 ml bottle. Something like 2 ml?

I think I put in like 8 to 10 drops in the platter bearing and a couple on the spindle itself.
It should take several seconds for the platter to spin down in the well and burp all the trapped air out.

A few drops on the motor spindle wouldn't hurt anything, either.

On the motor spindle? Should I access this from somewhere?

On top where the spindle goes into the motor body.
The idea is it will seep it's way down inside the motor.
Run it for a few hours and then try another drop if it has seeped in.
Keep this up till it's no longer accepting any oil.

Mind the belt, that must stay oil free.
