help need w rabco SL-8e Update on backer case TD-125

Post by bsohne » 10 Sep 2019 17:28

Hi everyone

Well I got the td-125 back together you can see details on previous post .... after I was luckily enough to find the exact parts needed in two Ebay auctions that totaled 50$ ....

Now the Rabco SL-8e tone arm is acting up

It will cue up for no apparent reason and then play fine other times .... I hate to even touch it ...

Anyone have any thoughts ?

Leave well enough alone ?

Best
Bill

It has been DECADES since I had my hands on a Rabco arm so take my advice pulled from my dim memory with more than the usual grain of salt.

Get the service manual here:
https://www.vinylengine.com/library/rabco.shtml

Odds are the issue is the servo contacts being dirty and/or out of adjustment. See the manual for location and adjustment of servo switches/contacts. They can be a bit fussy to get adjusted right. Clean contacts with Craig Deoxit G for gold contacts. I'd use the needle applicator instead for the spray. A little dab will do ya. Less is more.

As I recall disassembly/reassembly was a pretty straight forward deal on a stock Rabco. Read over the service manual and take your time. The "bits and bobs" of the Rabco had a sort of "random pieces bought at the hardware store" feel about them. They were not "Swiss watch fragile".

The two triangular gold plated wires are the first thing to start with -simply spray some DeOxit onto a Q tip and run that up and down the sensor wires a couple of times. Let sit for a few min. - and see if that does you any good. Back in the day-that fixed about 80% of the Rabco's i worked on. The thing does have a "designed by Kalshnikov" aesthetic - but was actually pretty rugged-course it's been decades since i worked on a standard SL-8E
