Technics SL-1200MK5G or SL-1200GR?

Postby graventein » 19 Mar 2017 22:49

Hi,
I have a question.
I can buy a used, in mint condition Technics SL-1200MK5G (900 euro). My second option would be a new Technics SL-1200GR (1499 euro).

Which one would be the best choice?

900 Euro is a ton of money for a used 1200.

I was faced with the same decision. Buy a new SL1200GR for an anticipated usd $2000 or find a used 1200. I decided to save the money, and bought a perfect, new in box SL1200MK2 for $750. This leaves me room for modifications, and I think it will be as good of a table as I will ever need. But, if I have the money one day I am by all means not ruling out a 1210GR...... but it won't be replacing the MK2.

A very interesting question. I have not heard the SL1200GR but given the price difference I would not even think about it and go for the SL1200GR. The 5g is 'the one' when it comes to the old 1200 family but in my opinion 900 Euros is way too much.

The sl1200 at 900 if mint is probably not over priced, but if you can afford it get the sl1200GR the motor is better. There wont be huge differences between the two, but the GR is tweaked in a few area so worth the extra IMO. I am trying to talk myself out of getting one too :D

Go for the GR no question, it's brand new with improvements and the quality should be top notch.

Unless your VinylDan1 who was lucky enough to find a new in the box SL1200 MK2 for only $750, then I would pony up for a new SL-1200GR.

Very nice. I'm tempted to buy a black one depending on what they end up running here in the US.

Got mine GR yesterday, with a little bit of adventure on the way:
First unit I received was faulty: unfiltered-power-like noise in right channel, amount of which is affected by headshell locking ring tightness ( really weird stuff ), platter was somewhat out of balance too. Replacement arrived yesterday.
Stock cable is noisy with Musical Fidelity V-LPS ( the first ), with iFi micro iPhono ( the first ) the TT doesn't play well at all, lots of hum. iPhono works just fine with Jelco sa-750d on another technics and lenco l75. The rest - yeah, that's modern Technics :)

Scullbox - were these all problems with your first unit that was defective - or with the new unit you just got ?
