Thanks for the hint.

One thing I want to say about my post, I don't want to imply that the Technics EPA 100-250 counterweight damping was equivalent to the Dual system. The Dual system used a bobbing subweight to break up (damp) arm resonances. The Technics system was much more sophisticated, using a combination of silicon oil and magnetic damping to resistively damp resonances; also it could be tuned to different cartridge compliance/weights. The EPA 500 system also incorporated different mass arm tubes. It is too bad that the new SL-1200g didn't use something like this more advanced arm design. Not saying the new arm is not a good one, just not as sophisticated it seems.

Merry Christmas to everyone, also.

Follow up: I added 2g to the headshell (in addition to the 3g spacer), and set tracking at 2.8g. If anything, the results were not as good. But as is usual with with these subjective things, it is hard to tell. Went back to the stock arm with sub weight on the counterbalance, and the 3 gram headshell spacer. I think this is fine for the DL-103. At least in my setup which is decidedly retro: Yamaha electronics/JBL L100 with 035Ti replacing the LE25 tweeter (original HF was damaged and factory replacement was no longer in the catalog--at the time the 035 was the JBL certified drop in replacement). It's the kind of thing Japanese like, but most Americans might find too colored. That's hi-fi for you.

Denon DL160 - DL110 - DL301 Mk2 - DL103R

The DL103R beats all of the previous ones. I'm hearing things in my record collection that I've never heard before! The synergy with the rest of my system seems spectacular.

DL103R > Technics SL1210 Mk2 (shrink wrap on arm, aux counterweight, stock headshell, arylic platter mat) > iFi iPhono > Blue Jeans LC1 > Little Dot MK3 (upgraded Amperex EF91 Bugle Boy tubes & Volex power cable) > Sennheiser HD580 headphones (HD 650 cable)
Do you recall how the 103R and 301mk2 compared? I have a 110 which I think sounds great on the 1200 and I just picked up a 301 to try because some people like it better than the 103R and even the expensive 304. The 301 is still in a sealed box and I was planning to do a couple mods before installing it.

"(The 301) sounds absolutely amazing on the 1200, better than the the DL-103R, the DL-160, and even better than the twice as costly DL-304 (although the DL-304 sounds better on the Nottingham than the DL-301). For me the DL-301 is the perfect cartridge for the 1200 of the ones I have auditioned."

So here’s the summary of my subjective experience with cartridges for the Technics 1200. The “Rating” from 1-10 represents sound, tracking ability, and cost combined.

1) Denon DL-301 MK II (retail $329; $250-range on ebay) – Rating: 10. Nah, this Rating goes to 11!
2) Denon DL-103R (retail $379; $250-range on ebay) – Rating: 9.5
3) Denon DL-304 (retail $689; $380-range on ebay) – Rating: 8.5
4) Benz MC Silver ($375)- Rating: 8
5) Sumiko Blue Point #2 ($299) – Rating: 8
6) Denon DL 160 (retail $180; $150-range on ebay) – Rating: 8
7) Nagaoka MP110 ($100-range) – Rating: 7
8) Shure M97Xe ($89) – Rating: 7
9) Grado Green ($80) – Rating:

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to compare the 301Mk2 to the DL103R back to back. Plus it's even harder for me to compare now since my DL103R has been potted into an aluminum body. This improvement brought out a lot of depth in the bass (which I remember was a strength of the 301Mk2 but can't remember to what degree). Also, the rest of the audio range with the aluminum body has cleaned up a bit. This clarity gives the perception of additional detail.

With the aluminum bodied 103R, I just don't have any desire right now to upgrade. Although when I do, I can get it retipped through Soundsmith or elsewhere for another bump up in sound.

I guess what I'm saying is that while I liked the 301Mk2, I'm also really liking the sound of the 103R as well. And the ability to upgrade the 103R as the wallet allows is a major plus for me.

The problem with Denon is that (as far as I know) they no longer offer any trades for used cartridges. Back in the day I went through several DL103D cartridges. In the '80s they sold (usually not discounted) for $260, which is inflation adjusted to well over $700.00. But you could trade it in for a new one at half price, making the spread manageable. I recently picked up two plain-jane DL103 for less than $200.00 a piece. It's the only value in the Denon line-up (with the possible exception of the 110). At two hundred dollars the 103 remains affordable to replace. I'd never pay top dollar for a moving coil unless there was a manufacturers trade in policy.

Hi all,

New to the forum here, and just wanting a little advice. I've picked up a 1200MK2 which I'm having serviced. I have to add a headshell and cart. I have a 2M Bronze already, and am having to decide which headshell to go with. I'm leaning towards the Ortofon LH-8000 as it seems specifically made for the 2M Bronze/Black, and checking the figures for the resonance frequency it seems to sneak in around the 7-8 mark, also the the weight of the Bronze + 8000 comes in at 15.7g, which falls nicely into the tonearm weight parameters.

Do these numbers stack up? Cheers in advance!

Edit:Apologies if this is off topic/hijacking!

Welcome!

The slots in the Ortofon headshells (haven't checked them all!) are too short to achieve a decent alignment in the Technics arm.
Just stick to the stock Technics headshell with the 2M Bronze, resonance frequency will already be low enough...

I currently have a Denon 103R, I ordered the a heavier counter weight set to allow me to use my Paradox Pulse Denon 130R ....for my money the Paradox Pulse 103R is the best bang for buck for a cartridge, however even with the additional counter weight extension it's too heavy for the supplied weights ...I purchased this set , should arrive this week..

I'm sure you'll love the Pardox Pulse 103R. I know it's the very best that I've ever had in my system!

I have the lighter KAB counterweight and it was too light to balance properly with the Paradox Pulse. So, I just went to the local hardware store and bought a 1 1/4 inch 8-32 machine screw. And then bought a heavy metal spacer with a bunch of smaller spacers and it ends up working very well.

Weights arrived yesterday...I will use the Hi-Fi News Test record later and set it up correctly , from the pic looks like the cart needs to be tighter to the shell..

I use an Ortophon Quintet black on a Project carbon fiber headshell. My 1200 M3D has complete KAB mods.

I use a Shure V15 type IV on my SL-1700 Mk1 (original Technics headshell). I'm loving it! Also have a Shure M94, which is a step down from the V15 on a no-name headshell and a Ortofon 2M red on a Ortofon LH-2000 headshell.
