1200mk2 On/Off Cap Question

Post by wagawaa » 26 Sep 2019 16:44

Hi, I've recently acquired a technics 1200mk2 turntable which is in great shape but is missing the on/off cap. When plugged in, the turntable is permanently on- I am looking for advice on how to reinstall the cap. I've identified some replacement parts online (https://www.ebay.com/itm/POWER-ON-OFF-K ... SwjL5ZFZwg)

But, I'm not sure that this would work as it looks like my machine already has the shaft stuck in there. I've tried twisting the remaining bit of shaft in there with pliers but I haven't been able to turn it off. I simply cannot grip the shaft firmly enough to rotate it. Do I just need to attach a new cap without a new shaft? Is my shaft stuck? Am I misunderstanding how this part works? Please see that attached image and let me know. Thanks in advance!!

They don't seem to stock it but I'll send an email.

I guess my question is more along the lines of- if I wasn't able to turn the shaft in there using pliers would reattaching just a cap make any difference? Or is the problem to do with the shaft itself being stuck and I will need to do some further work on the on/off mechanism?

Here you go. https://www.kabusa.com/m1200.htm Scroll down to Technics power knobs.

I would assume if you can't turn it with pliers, it's going to need further investigation before spending anything. It should turn quite easily I would have thought.

I would call kabusa before ordering the part and explain your situation.

Try pushing on the shaft rather than twisting it.

The shaft is held by a C clip underneath, you have to open the bottom of turntable to acces that. Watch out there is a spring and ball bearing underneath the white actuator, be carefull not to lose them. The shaft is probably bent, or stuck with dirt or both. Once the C clip is out you will be able to pull it out. If you want to order the shaft and the button it will cost you at least 30 bucks, and your strobe tower does not look good. PM me if you want a drop in fully working control plate with strobe tower and all like new.The only soldering you will need to do is the power switch, other than that, just 4 screws to remove.

Thanks everyone for the replies - really appreciate it. Sounds like I'll have to disassemble to see what the problem is with the shaft.
