technics sl-230 problem

Post by digmore » 17 Sep 2019 20:54

This turntable was recently serviced by another party, i believe the record size selector lever is
now non functioning. When moving the size select switch the lever is not near or contacting the size
segmented nylon plate. I have looked at the schematic, but I am not sure whether its assembled correctly,
or if there is some key part missing here. Anyone familiar with this design or problem can offer
any help or suggestions? thank you

Hi, the plastic record size selector lever is on the wrong side of the metal lever with the pin. You will need to remove the mechanism so the the selector lever can be moved to the correct location. And who ever serviced this turntable seems to have left a lot of old grease in it. I hope this help.

Hi digmore, I was wrong about the index lever position. As you can see in my upper picture it is in the correct position in your picture. My guess is that the index lever is frozen on the post it's mounted on by old grease and unable to move into position. You will need to remove the mechanism and flip it over. Then remove the index lever and clean the post and inside the bore in the lever with a rag dipped in alcohol. Then apply fresh grease to both and assemble. If you want to clean off any other old grease you see and apply fresh grease do so. The cleaner the mechanism the better it ill work. I like to use Super lube brand grease in these mechanisms it available at most hardware stores in small tubes. I hope this helps.

Thanks for the info and pics. I have looked at the mechanism to see exactly what has to be
disconnected and the screws pulled. I think i understand what needs to be done here. What still
puzzles me is the location of that plastic select lever in relation to the metal control lever.
You are correct about the plastic select lever, it is very stiff and hardly moves. I am hoping to
be able to lift this up just enough to clean and service that plastic select lever.

Pulled the entire mechanism off and cleaned/relubed the select lever and post, used Aerolube, a light weight lithium grease. There was still quite a bit of old grease under there. Everything works like its supposed to and it sounds great!
Thanks for your help
