The 1400 MK2 probably needs the cueing mechanism repaired. Even then it would be my choice over the other two: Quartz Lock Direct Drive and suspended platter / tonearm semi automatic.

I have a Technics direct drive SL-D2, bought it 2nd hand for a song as it looked as though it had had a hard life, cleaned the platter, the body & the pots and it has performed flawlessly ever since when I use it to play 2nd hand records bought from charity shops etc originally, will put a good cart in it and play good condition vinyl occasionally.
Semiautomatic, i.e lifts up and returns at end of record, it is pretty bullet proof.
Though I wish it was Quartz lock, so Roberto is probably right

No, no, no...If the price is right, guys...You buy the 1400 as the main rig and keep the D2 as a backup!

It's the only way!! =D>

I know my D2 was $50 and worth every penny, but as you well know, nothing wrong with owning more than one! :D

The SL-1400MkII is the best looking of them all. And also the best spec one. The SL-D2 is pretty decent and easier to bring up to top-notch operation. The 1400MkII is pretty complicated both in fixing the tonearm, as well as setting up the suspended sub-chasis correctly. But it looks great, did I already write this? The series has been my favorite out-of-reach during 12 grade at school.
