Technics SL110 with SME 3009 s2 arm opinions..

Post by goatbreath » 23 Feb 2019 06:41

I have been offered this combo for a swap..
I was quite excited,I am reading that it doesn't sound that good
I have other good decks..Plus doesn't like the arm tracking over 2 grams,
apparently the Motor is quite weak..
Plus there is virtually zero isolation built in...
Is this true..

I also Run A Sondek..Thorens Decks..Logic DM101 Electronic,
Ariston RD 11 Superieur and a Michell Mycro..

Is the SL110 above, competitive or below these decks..
I read it was basically a SL1500 in drag and just too early an effort before Technics DD got Good... :D

Thanks for any replies..Hoping there will be loads of knowledge on here... :D

What do they want in exchange? What you have is good.
I have an SL-1100, which is 110 with a Technics arm, and an SP-10, which came with an SME S2 Imp.
I was excited to be getting an SME, but was disappointed with the sound. I changed the nylon bearing for a bronze one, then had to damp the arm tube, and got some very fine sound from it. Then I read about a capacitor being embedded in the cables, removal of which might have been an easier fix.
I honestly don't know how much difference there is between the the transport of SP-10 and the SL110. The plinths are very different.

Cheers,
Alec

I swapped some valve gear I wasn't using..I am listening right now and enjoying it very much..It came with a series 2 Improved S2 with detachable headshell..I have a strong feeling it has the slightly heavier counterweight..The SME headshell with a M75 ED just floats fully upwards, even with the counterweight fully forwards..I am using a Shure M55e in an ADC headshell just now and it works great...I know I didn't need another turntable, but I am, badly addicted..

I've lost count. :D

Nice. Yours looks better than mine, which is all silver, and yours still has the strobe.

It's more than fine enough to be my main daily driver turntable. Armless SL-1100 (a favorite turntable of mine), SME 3009 II tonearm (a favorite tonearm of mine). Kent T approved x 100.
