1210 MK2 headshell and cart set up

Postby RedPhil » 11 Jun 2018 08:00

Hi everyone

I at last got my hands on a 1210 mk 2 a few days ago, been looking for one at the right price in the right condition for some time. Had to get the pair, I'll be keeping one and moving one on. Neither came with a functioning cart so first job is to sort this, they have the standard arm and technics headshell. By the way I've tested with the jelco headshell with moded Denon dl 103 borrowed from another deck and they work fine.

For now I'm looking to set them up cheap and cheerful - to sell the one and to use the other until I have more funds to upgrade. In taking off the old carts I see that the headshells have had an additional weight added between cart and headshell. These are highly magnetised.

I was going to use a At95e on the 1210 but I'd be reluctant to use the magnetised weight. Searching the Web it would appear that non ferrous weights are quite expensive - £15 as opposed to the £4 for the standard. I tried with a spare - not very good condition at95e that I have without the weight and couldn't get it balanced. So questions are :

Where can I get non ferrous weights cheaply appreciate £15 is not expensive but trying to keep costs to a minimum having used all my wife credit in the £480 for the decks
Any other suggestions for suitable carts that would maybe not need the extra weight but would not exceed the £30 price.

Thanks very much

Phil

I have the same turntable and have used the AT95E with the standard headshell and without the additional headshell weight and I can set up to 2.5g VTF without any problems.

Just a guess but it sounds like you may have the auxiliary weights installed – these screw into the end of the counterweight stub to allow heavier headshells / cartridges to be used.

The Jelco headshells are a fair bit heavier than the Technics ones so this would not necessarily have presented a problem when you installed the Denon to test.

Thanks a lot chiz good to know that the at95e will work. I'll check the deck again when I get home. Phil
