Hi all, just ordered the MK7 and I am looking for cartridge to pair it.

Any comments on these to pair AT540ML, Goldring 1042 or Hana EH? Thanks newbie here.

Welcome Voxy.

This topic alone is 35 pages long now, as you can see, we all like different cartridges depending on budget, musical taste, personal beliefs and technical requirement that can or cannot be met depending on the rest of your gear.
Have a good read first. If you don't find a suitable answer on this forum, create a new topic with a specific question.
(don't forget to add as much info as possible)

Here's the rub: you can buy any cartridge but having not earlier heard it on familiar records you might perceive another cart could get a better result, in other words, you will not understand whether you should or should not be satisfied. At any rate, my advise is now just get an Ortofon 2M Blue. It is the cart which Technics is often seen to use in demonstration of its offerings today. This cart is easy to align perfectly to Technics alignment specification and to get correct VTA angle from Technics stock headshell. The cartridge only costs about $250 and is faved by a lot of folks for its overall performance/value. As your curiosity and budget dictate you can indulge other carts down the road which have come to your attention.

Just my opinion, but the 2m blue us the last cart I would out on a Technics, it is glassy hard and thin and often sibilant. Not many combinations I truly hate but the 2m red and blue are two carts really can't stand.

The Red and Blue not that great on my SL1500 C which I imagine has the same arm as the SL1200 MK 7 ..
Why Technics picked the Ortofon 2Ms I don't know..
I sent 3 Blues back,so bad was the mismatch..
They also behaved badly in the tracking tests on the HiFi News Test Record..

The AT VM95 E with AT Headshell 9 grams and Denon DL 110 with Sumiko Headshell 12 grams
are my favourites..

The Nagaoka MP11 with Nagaoka Headshell has a quite fierce upper mid going on..
It's quite tiring..

I tried various cartridges, but none of the ones you are asking about.

AT 95 E,AT91,AT91 R,Ortofon 510 MK 2,Shure M55e,M44-7,2 styli 1 cartridge,
Shure M75ed,M75 B.,M97 Xe..
The V15 III too but non tie wire Jico stylus had very poor suspension..
Plus the Ortofon 2M Red and the Blue..

Thank you for the replies... I think I will start with AT540 as my reference before I venture beyond since it has slightly better construction compare to the Blue 2M and it’ cost cheaper of the two in Singapore. 😬

Will report back when I set it up. I am also upgrading my power amps to Hypex class D , let’s see how all the new gears fit together. Hopefully I like the fit.

I vote AT540 like first cart. You would not be unsatisfied :)

Van den Hul DDT-II Special on SL-1200G

Post by mo-tech » 17 Jan 2020 07:26

A new SL guy here, been on Thorens for over 15 years, but since I've been also DJ-ing in the past the new G was irresistable and I simply had to get one. It's the only true "hi-fi" SL-1200 for me.

On SL-1200G using my tried and tested Van den Hul DDT-II Special cartridge. I just love how the VdH MCs sound. I've been using the very same DDT-II for over 14 years now. Mr. Van den Hul has personally retipped and overhauled it twice for me during this time (I used to listen vinyl 2-3 hours every day, now still some 1-2hr a day average and note the VdH lifespan is usually twice or more longer than an average MC cartridge - due to special tip and low required force the VdH cartridge good lifespan is around 4000 hours compared to 1000-2000 hours on many if not most other MCs in the market), top notch service always from him returning the cartridge as new again for a very affordable cost - I get a proper treatment with the special VdH line-contact tip that to my knowledge no other offer for that kind of money. Hence I'm a bit of VdH convert through long practice and I'd not consider any other MC cartridge now since high-quality retipping/overhauling them would be to too expensive or too much hassle for me. It's been so easy and affordable with VdH to run high quality MC-s in long term "marathon" listening IMHO. I may consider upgrading to some finer VdH cartridge in the future though, someday...

There was one small IF though, I had to buy ADC magnesium headshell to get this high compliance cartridge into "good zone" with the G model magnesium tonearm resonance frequency (ADC is over 1 gram lighter than the Technics headshell, which is considered among the lightest in the class, hence ADC is probably the lightest quality headshell you can get).

After that it's bang on and this is the best sounding combo I've ever had.

(Using VdH MC Gold phono cabling, self-made Hiraga MC stepup and Konka RIAA7 preamp)

I have to agree with @goatbreath - my opinion is the same about this cartridges on my SL1500C (with built-in preamp).
Now I'm testing Technics EPC205IIC-L but with very old stylus.
I think it is vintage from 70's, so I'm looking for opinion about JICO stylus replacement.
I hope old very good Technics cartridge + new JICO SAS stylus will make nirvana .... :)

Your best bet with Jico Styli it seems is ordering directly from them from what i have read...
I googled the EPC 205.. It seems it is a very good cartridge indeed..
I think the L means low output model..
It seems they have different magnets so it's something to find out about before ordering and if Jico do the right Stylus Assembly..

There is a thread on it here..

After searching and reading so many comments, I decided to go with Nagaoka MP200 with Jelco magnesium alloy headshell..... I will also get the Cambridge Audio CP2 as phono pre. Hopefully it works out.

I use a Nagaoka MP-110 in an Mg-704 magnesium headshell of the same manufacturer and a Denon DL-110 in an Audio Technica AT-LT13A die cast aluminium headshell. Both sound very good. No inner groove distortion at all, using the straight alignment (52mm from rubber washer to stylus tip) that Technics and Nagaoka recommend. The Denon is almost twice as expensive as the Nag, I'm not sure whether that's justified by a better sound. Maybe I like the Nagaoka even better.
