Philips 867 Problems!

Post by rayala12 » 27 Aug 2017 05:31

Sup guys, i just bought a philips 867 from goodwill today. its in alright condition. the plastic cover is scratchd and cracked and the base case is warped, but other than that, it seems alright at first glance.

After powering it on, i discovered that the motor is extremely slow, and the "direct control" buttons dont keep the table spinning. Now, I can't seem to find much information about this turntable anywhere, but if you guys could help and or point me in the right direction, i would greatly appreaciate it :)

Hi and welcome to the forum.

There are no manuals for the 867 in the Library, and the only (user) manual I found online is in Dutch only — but I have to say I didn't do an extensive search.

The 867 is similar to the 967 (but the 967 has Quartz control and digital speed readout), for which there is a service manual in the Library, but again in Dutch only!

Philips 877 manuals are in the Library, it's the semi-automatic version of the 867 (the 877 returns the tonearm after play, the 867 just stops the motor after play).

I haven't seen a Philips turntable with a 'bad' motor yet, the problems are usually with the controls. To be more specific: the speed control knobs are attached to two small potentiometers, located inside the cabinet. Cleaning these out with contact cleaner will most likely solve the problem.

Just to be sure: did you check if the rubber drive belt is still in good condition, and if the turntable platter can rotate freely without the belt attached?

The platter turns fine, but the belt does look a little bad. I will try to clean the potentiometeres when I get home from work later today. Hopefully, that will fix the playback problems.
