Philips Super Electronic 877 , stop spinning - help

Post by akashaman » 27 Dec 2018 10:54

hi :

i recently bought a super clean philips 877 on ebay for a good bit , ha
it worked great when i got it last week for about a day !
then the motor just stopped working.
i found another table , SAME for just 25 bucks nearby so i bought it , hoping to change out motor & all good ....
no such luck :(
Looking around on the main board where the motor wires go i noticed some bad caps , about 8 or so ; all same color -
long story short , i replaced caps & she still wont turn on !
the old ugly one i bought for parts works fine ! LOL
ha , i was thinking of changing out that main board but there are like 15 + wires attached to it !
i am just a novice [ obviously , ha ]
any help / tips appreciated ;

I LOVE THIS TABLE ! :)

One thing to check is the LED light, inside the turntable, underneath the tonearm base. Those LED's will lose some power over the years and will not emit enough light anymore, causing all kinds of troubles.

Part # is LED404 in the service manual.

I'm working on a Philips 887 right now (basically the same model as your 877, but with Quartz lock, and no pitch control). It has a different problem: once the tonearm returns to the armrest (after auto stop or reject), the tonearm continues to raise and lower and the platter won't stop turning. I put the unit on its side (without the platter on) and removed the bottom cover. Starting the turntable with the 33 or 45 button, the motor runs and drives the subplatter. Press the reject button and the tonearm will get stuck in this raise/lower/continous reject mode.
It would stop doing this when I point a flash light onto the LDR (R499 in the service manual). This means the LED has become too weak, and I need to replace it.

In your case, the LED might be even weaker, and the turntable maybe thinks it's in the 'Stop' mode. Perhaps you can switch out the LED from the non-working unit with the one in the working unit, and see how that works.

No, it's the one underneath the tonearm base, it's clipped into a plastic holder and is pointed towards the LDR. I'll take a picture when I replace the LED. I have to go to the electronics store to get one first, later this afternoon. Stay tuned...

Here's a picture of the underside of the turntable. The LED can be seen in the white circle with the arrow:

Not sure. I took my old LED to the electronics store and they gave me a standard 5 mm red bulb. It worked, the turntable functions as it should now. The LED cost me €0.25. I bought 10 so I have a small stash for future repairs.

I hear you — as it appears I spoke too soon regarding the fix for my own problem. First test was positive, but later the problem returned, the only way to make it stop is to shine a bright external light into the LDR. Maybe there's something else going on. Need to try some other stuff I guess.

Anyway, keep us posted.

Well it looks like I found the answer for my problem. I did some more online searching and ended up on a German forum, where someone posted a picture of the 887 PCB from the service manual. What was mentioned there was corrosion of the Variable Resistors, that control the autoreturn operation, on that PCB. So I sprayed some contact cleaner on them and worked them back and forth a number of times. Now the constant lifting and lowering of the tonearm has stopped. I hope it will be a permanent fix. Might need to do some finetuning.

It is perhaps something you could also look into. The PCB for the 877 is different than the one on the 887, but not that different. The VR numbers on your 877 would be R501 and R503. Worth a try?

It can't hurt to clean the speed potentiometers R496 and R498 (underneath the knobs on the turntable) and VR's R495 and R497 (on the PCB) too.
