Experiencing humming sound with Audio Technica AT-LP120

Post by iamgillianv95 » 26 Feb 2016 11:28

Hi guys,

I'm having a bit of a problem with my turntable (AT-LP120). There is a hum coming from my right speaker. But when the needle touches the vinyl the hum dissapears and the speaker doesn't produce any sound. Can i do something about this?

Strange problem...
What cartridge do you have?

The one that came with the turntable, the AT95E.

I'm no electrical expert but it might be a loose connection among the cartridge wires that connect the cartridge to the headshell - possibly at the pins on the cartridge or the pins on the headshell. You could try removing the headshell from the arm (it is detachable) and use narrow-nose pliers to squeeze the tags around the pins to make sure they are secure.

Hum stopping when the stylus touches the record does not make any sense to me.... Although I remember to have heard a similar story from someone who had a Shure 97 cartridge. No idea how it ended.
Is the turntable new or was it ok in the beginning? The LP120s sometimes come right of the box full of faults. How is it connected?

I bought it new. As far as i can remember it was okay in the beginning. I don't experience this humming sound everytime btw. It seems to appear at random. What do you mean by "How is it connected"?

I meant do you use the internal preamplifier?

hm, suppose this did not change anything? You said the hum was only on one channel... When you swap the left and right output cable does the hum move to the left channel?
Do have the chance to try a different cartridge? Mabe some Ortofon that you can mount instead of the headshell and have a look if the problem goes away?

Best,
Georg

Take the headshell off the arm, wipe the contacts, and replace it. It might be a bit loose.

Cheers,
Alec

Something seems to have worked. I tried squeezing the tags and i tried wiping the contacts, like you guys suggested. I don't know which of the both worked, but it doesn't hum anymore. Thank you!
