Spring suspension for direct drive turntables

Post by blekenbleu » 31 Dec 2019 00:37

I would have preferred a semi-automatic turntable with spring suspension,
but that would have required getting lucky with e.g a used Technics SL-1700MK2 from eBay.
Instead, I unscrewed feet from my AT-LP140XP and treaded M6x2.0 nuts down about 1/4 inch
to engage the small ends of $8 conical springs from Amazon
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0085YV9YE.
Somewhat stiffer and taller springs could be better...
Conical spring upper ends are located in 1/8-inch recesses drilled by a 3/4" spade bit
in 3/8" thick 2.25 inch diameter plywood pucks that fit in the plinth feet pockets:

Looks nice. Good resonance frequency.

Thanks.
Ideally, this should be installed inside a larger case with larger dust cover resting on it
for isolation from airborne vibrations.

Good resonance frequency.
This version somewhat lowers resonance and appreciably reduces sensitivity of lateral impacts to turntable stand:

But does it sound better than the original?
