To avoid excessive cart temperatures (above 27°C: hiss and too much high frequency output) a thermostat is highly recommended (this inexpensive one seems to be "the" home brewers choice - some adaptations for direct mounting and cable strain relieve, also installed a primary fuse and secondary grounding). In my opinion it is not always necessary to measure the temperature at the headshell, but a similarly radiation-absorbing sensor in the vicinity of the tonearm will heat up almost proportional. Current thermostat setting is 27.5°C as cutoff temp, resetting 1°C below.
