My Rega Planet bought in 1975. The concept of three flimsy supports for the record was somewhat misunderstood, which I gathered soon after I acquired the turntable. So I tinkered a bit with it. Off with the planets and the center support was lathed down and a cheese serving plate (marble) added for genuine support for the record was bought. I lathed a clamp from the top of a VW Beetle piston and a brass nut to fit on a bespoke center split with threads. Under the holder I put a peace of leather to lift the record 1mm before the clamp pressed it down around the leather. The turntable is standing on a glass plate which is supported on 4 springs. As far as I remember this conversion was done before the Planar came out.
Edit: Oh... And had to grind off some material from the tonearm counterweight to balance the quite light Ortofon Concorde 20.
