Sansui SR-1050

Sansui SR-1050

10/10 by Naggy

When people see it they say whoa nice turntable. The walnut veneer is nice and it on top of thick plywood. The heavy strong lid is high quality too. The lid is slightly angled at the front, to help deflect sound waves.

The base and feet are poor, maybe representive of the type of manufacture back then. They offer poor vibration insulation. I took mine off and now the deck sits on a bamboo base with half squash balls under each corner. This opened up the sound much more.

I bought this turntable because of the tonearm, and the cartridge weight it could handle, yes it has a heavy counterweight. The tonearm is the only tonearm that Sansui ever sold separately- the TA-2050. So it’s a good one. Also note that the Sr2050 has the identical TA-2050, the slight difference on the Sr 1050 is a heavier counterweight, perfect for the heavier cartridges. The unit sits on 3 internal springs. When upside down for servicing you can see the high quality of the components, particularly the motor which looks strong and like brand new.

The sound is very good, With stanton 500 and heavy Pickering U38 cartridges, also Nagaoka nm33. I took the old belt off and dropped it in boiling cup of water, it shrank a bit, back to its normal shape perhaps, anyway the belt works well. The anti static mat has Shiny metal inner circle. It’s a heavy deck for its size and has simple minimal electronics. The sound is very nice indeed, after all the Japanese SME 3009 TA2050 near design must help. Look up the TA 2050 spec here on VinyEngine, impressed?

A fine looking and sounding deck, well done Sansui.

My first turntable. Has great materials (wooden body and solid s-type tone arm) and great sound, but it gives me a hardtime dealing with the counter weight (no scale) and the anti skate mode (the pendulum type, idk how we call it, but pendulum it is for convenience sake).

As a hobby I have serviced about 10-15 vintage turntable. This one impressed me, build quility and sound, fine tonearm. This was an entry level turntable, and still that good. But you need a stylus pressure gauge, the counterweight has no scale. Robert Sweden
