Which Kind of Blue?

Postby Rob998 » 30 Jul 2012 19:46

Some time ago I bought a copy of Bitches Brew & I really like it, so would like to get Kind Of Blue as an example of some of his more accessible work.

However there are a plethora of versions out there!

A very quick google just for the 180g european reissues brought up these in my price range:

180g single LP (Not Now Music NOTLP120)
180g single LP (Music On Vinyl MOVLP019-2)
180g double LP (Music On Vinyl MOVLP019 (with 2 extra tracks))
180g double LP (not Now Music NOT2LP145 (mono & stereo versions of lp, 1 on each disc))

There were even more, but I got confused....

Any suggestions, budget is about £20 GBP.

Thanks!

I recently bought this on 180g Music on Vinyl with the two extra tracks. It sounds wonderful.

Thanks, that's the one I was leaning toward, although the one with both mono & stereo versions was intriguing!

Thanks again, I'm off next week so quite fancy a trip into Manchester to do some vinyl shopping!

If you ever to go to Prestwich, check out Endless Music. 2nd hand vinyl shop, emphasis on rock (which I know you like), but with a good selection of other stuff. If you find something you like & it's a bit rough, ask the guys if they have a nicer copy in the back.... they generally do. The owners are like Waldorf & Statler out of the Muppet show, they even have a statue of them!

I have no connection except handing over my hard earned to them!

Well I just returned from Endless Music. Thanks for the tip Rob998. It was just as you said it would be. The guys found nicer copies of things I was interested in the back room. I came away with a sealed 180g copy of Led Zeps Mothership. I don't really need it but hey-ho it almost completes my Led Zep collection. I also bought a nice edition of Springsteen's live box set from the mid eighties. The laminate on the box is lifting but the vinyl and sleeves are in superb condition.

I'll be revisiting very soon.

It took me three tries to get a decent copy of the 2 disk MOV Kind of Blue. Even then, I had to take the 1st disk from the 2nd copy and put it with the 2nd disk from the 3rd copy to get two records without major defects. The 1st disk from the 3rd copy actually sounded better (less crackles and pops) than the one I kept, but it had a 1/2" hockey-stick shaped, deep scratch on the 1st track. So to sum up, in three tries, I never got a good copy without switching disks. If I hadn't kept the 2nd copy before getting the third, I would have given up.

1st copy had really loud pops, six in a row at one point on Disk 1, Side 1
2nd copy had a bad Disk 2, Side 2 with loud background hiss all the way through. No, it wasn't tape noise since it didn't appear on the 1st or 3rd copies.
3rd copy had the earlier mentioned large scratch on Disk 1, Side 1.

There is a Mobile Fidelity version coming soon. I would wait for that.
