Rotel rp900 (REGA)?

Postby 67rayson » 06 Apr 2012 17:05

Just bought a Rotel RP900 TT and a Rotel RQ970BX equalizer for 200USD?
Was that a Good price?
It looks like a Rega?, it has a Glass platter and a 250 tone arm?
Always wanted to buy a Rega TT, But this was in Excellent shape!
so I went for it.
I am just getting back into Vinyl after 25 years,
so I thought I would try this Forum!
Any Help or info on either the Turntable or Equalizer,
will be Greatly Appreciated!
Thanks!!!

I can't comment on the TT as I am not familiar with it.

However, I do have the RQ970BX and in my view it is a step up from the phono stage in budget amps.

When I come to change it I expect I will have to pay at least £300 to £400 to improve significantly.

Enjoy it I say :)

Hi,
welcome to VE and welcome back to vinyl too.
Don't know this deck, so can't say if it's a 'badged' Rega or a Rotel made version, either way it should perform well enough.
The BX series of amps and other components date from late 80's - mid 90's, I think and again all competent pieces, so the phono stage should be good. Think you got a good deal overall, enjoy!
You can find instruction manuals for both units here in the VE library, if you don't have them alredy.

From what I have read the Rotel RP900 falls under like rather than Rega made. Some of the parts such as bearing and subplatter/platter are not interchangable with Rega.

I would say that you paid a reasonable price and performance of the TT should be on par with a Rega Planar 2.

I would second the good deal (price) post. Great price, over this side of the water, that phono stage is well respected average price (80eur), also it is hard to find the rb250 for under 100eur roughly (115usd). So sit back and enjoy your vinyl again...

Hi

Yes, I seem to remember the RP900 has come up before (actually it was on DIYAudio), and appears to be rather similar to the Systemdek I/920. 1512
The old Systemdek company, towards the end of their existence, experimented with a "budget" alternative to the IIX series, and made something that was, surprisingly for them, Rega-esque! Of course, the Dunlop family kept the Systemdek name, and have now come back into the turntable market, very much at the high-end.

The OP's deck looks like good value, as it comes with an RB250. Nice combination with the RQ970 phono stage.

Hi Jim

I think I replied to your question over on DIYAudio. Basically, only the RB250 is interchangeable (of course!) with any Rega arm. However, the belts are certainly available here in the UK (just type "Systemdek" into EBay UK - you need the round-section one for a I/920, not the flat IIX belt). The sub-platter and bearing, and also the fitting to the glass platter, seem to have different dimensions compared with a Rega.

If the sub-platter appears to run true and there are no extraneous noises, there should be no need for anything other than lubrication of the bearing and belt replacement. The deck is a fairly simple design, and few other parts should need replacing. I would just enjoy it! Fortunately, you picked up a very decent phono stage at the same time, so a good quality cartridge will not be wasted.

Because of the different size, the Rega sub-platter upgrades commonly fitted are not applicable. However, you might be able to fit an acrylic upgrade platter designed for a Systemdek IIX - but I'd check the dimensions with suppliers first. The RB250 could take an improved counterweight and stub, which would probably be the most cost-effective upgrade. The Systemdek in the picture has an RB300, where this is less necessary.

HTH
