anti static turntable mat question...

Postby midfi » 31 Dec 2011 04:11

does anyone here use this tonar mat? http://diamondgroove.com/detail.aspx?ID=3816
if so what is your experience? does it cut static down as advertised? I know I know, I have the fiber brushes as well as a anti static gun but I would like to have a mat that kills it(or minimizes it) from the start.

Years ago tried this sort of mat, and they can reduce problem unless you have enormous amounts of static.

We also used to use a thin sliver of tin foil (about 1/4 inch wide) about eight inches long across the mat and over the mat edge and then a couple of inches under the mat to make contact with the metal on the platter. You can also take the foil through the centre hole in the mat so that the foil comes into contact with the spindle. Worth a try and should only take a few minutes to make.

Regards
Pete

So, has anyone tried this mat? And does it work?

I'm struggling with static atm.... static gun, carbon brush.. nothing works.

I'm using the stock wool mat on my Rega P3-24.

I have a couple of D-Stat (from Discwasher) mats that I purchased years ago. They are quite effective eliminating static especially in the low humidity winter months, which is when I use one.

The Tonar is the first anti-static mat I come across that does not look like an ugly DJ type mat with a logo on it in some horrible color. If it does work I might get one, but I've read that they can muffle the bass.

I bought the Tonar mat. It gets rid of 50% of the static. It's an improvement but I'm not impressed..

I use the cork mat from Pro-ject on my Debut III. Very happy with it, nearly all the static is gone.

I use a Music Hall cork mat ,no static and it is a great platter isolation tweak . Tightens up the bass also .

Best anti-static solution I have found is the Mapleshade Record brush. This grounds to the safety ground via a wire and plug. Very effective.Slightly off topic.

I have a Luxman pd 282,and i have a bit of static problem, and to day i bought a cork mat, to see if it helped. It dident, it made a little problem much worse. So i use the old Luxman rubbermat again.
30 years ago i had a Fisher turntable, and on that, i used an AM antistaticmat, and it helped. I cant find any chop selling the AM mat now. It was a filt like mat. If anyone knows a chop...please help.

Hi
I am also having the static problem and was thinking of trying a cork mat
to see if this was any better that the felt one which is fitted at present, having just read through this thread and it seem that cork is not the best option either,
is anybody using a leather mat and still having the problem.
I dont want to spend good money and still have the same problem, they all claim to be anti static mats but dont seem to live up to the claims..
so whats the verdict on leather ? ?

Try wiping the mat with a damp dryer sheet.

Cheers,

The Herbie way excellent II mat is very nice at reducing / eliminating static and sounded much better than a felt or leather suede mat.

I keep a small bowl of water near my table during the dry times of year. I also use a can of Static Guard around the floor and near my gear to help eliminate static in the air.....never spray on any gear.
This along with the dryer sheet keeps static in check.
