Cartridge for Dual 510?

Postby wrappedupinbooks » 06 Mar 2011 12:03

I've recently resurrected a Dual 510 that's been sitting on a closet shelf for over a decade, and am looking to replace the cartridge and stylus, which are perhaps 30+ years old. My current listening setup (a Sony sound bar, used also for television, movies, and gaming) doesn't demand the highest quality cartridge/stylus combination, and I'm also on a budget.

Would something like the Shure M97xE cartridge ($54.95 at Amazon) be suitable? Any suggestions for a reasonably priced yet high-quality stylus? Would the stylus that comes with the Shure cartridge even need replacing, given my relatively low-tech speaker situation? I'm a complete novice at this, so forgive my ignorance.

Many thanks in advance for your assistance.

You did not say what cartridge came with the Dual. Perhaps a new stylus would be good.
The M97 would work well, and could be upgraded later, with a Jico SAS stylus.
I used a Grado on mine for years. They go well with the light arm.

Cheers,
Alec

Thanks, Alec.

The current cartridge is an Ortofon. I went ahead and ordered the Shure M97, and will probably upgrade the stylus in a month or so.

Ortofon cartridges are rather good on Duals, too. They can usually be upgraded by changing the stylus.

Cheers,
Alec

Update: I changed the cartridge and stylus earlier in the week, and am astonished by the improvement in sound. I'll probably experiment with different styli/cartridge combinations when I'm more comfortable fiddling around with the turntable, but for the moment, the Shure is working like a charm.
