Who has the most modded sl1200, 1210 on VE??

Postby cafe latte » 02 Jan 2011 05:57

Thought this might stimulate some interesting pics and discussion.. Mine is stock apart from the leads and a modded arm base plate with right angled gold plated rca adapters so any rca leads can be used. I am thinking of buying a spare arm, so I was going to get the m5g arm which is a bit better, so I will fit that . I have a few headshells most are Zupreme.
I am sure you guys can do much better. :D

Hi

Well my 1210 has a psu and replacement main bearing , a set of Isonoe feet , i replaced the standard arm with an SME 309 mounted on the armboard , removed the plastic cover under the platter, and the Funk 1200 achromat with an Alchemist record weight to finnish off.

Hi CL,
I have read that the fixing screws are of different length or some thing so beware when fitting a Mk5 arm if this is true.

Hi,

PSU, Jelco 750D arm, motor dynamics mod, S0TA mat + Clamp, sorbothane feet, space underneath main bearing filled up.

I'm still planning to do some research on the internal damping, something less damping or so

Wow, they are two nice sounding TT's. What made the most difference In your opinions?
Hi Rocker, thanks for that info on the screws, does anyone know what the actual problem is??

Not sure about VE , but this one belongs to a Canadian customer of mine. Mike New Bearing, custom platter (!) new feet, internal plinth damping and mods, a solid 20mm aluminium arm mounting plate (I know 'cos I made that) nice record clamp, external power supply and probably some more that I don't know.

....plus about 10mm of solid copper mat

It's on the wrong side of the Atlantic for me to have a listen, but reckoned to sound pretty good.

Well for me i still think the external psu was the most critical upgrade but the 309 is quite a bit better than the still good stock techie arm .

That is really nice!! Bit concerned about the load on the motor though with the record weight and the 10mm thick copper mat.
Nice arm, what is the cart?

I think the cartridge was a Clearaudio Virtuoso, though that was back last summer and might have been replaced now.

I'm really not sure what effect adding a lot of weight has on the motor. The direct drive is fairly torquey and, once up to speed, the heavy mass should actually help stability. Maybe one of our Technics experts could give an opinion on that?

Yes it would be interesting, as it was hifi world were I read it could be a problem.

Same here but I do recall an expert posting elsewhere recently about the possible pitfalls of over doing the mass loading on the Technics motor, all a bit over my head really but he seemed to advise caution.

That said I fancy trying a copper mat on my 1210 (to add to the psu, Isonoe feet, New brass bearing, Herbie's Mat and the SME309) at least it's easily reversible if you don't like the results.

I heard a Raven AC with a copper mat last week and it was very impressive. The noise floor was possibly the lowest I've heard.

Annealed C101 grade copper has some interesting sound scatter properties so I can see why it would work. The only drawback is the cost and likely to increase as copper prices are going through the roof.
