Pioneer PL-950 low sound

Postby braxton53 » 22 Oct 2010 17:18

Hi everybody,
I need help please.
I've received a vintage Pioneer PL-950 turntable few days ago from a neighbor. I've played some of my record coulple times and everything was working ok .
This morning I've noticed the sound (I am using a JVC receiver) was very low .I've checked several things and I 've found out that the stylus on my turntable is a Pioneer 6MC. I believe it is a wrong one . I believe the right one should be 5MC. Is this the reason why the sound has droped so low?
Also please ,what is a good place to buy the right stylus for my Pioneer PL-950 and what brand is the best one? Thanks.

You are using a Moving Coil cartridge. Does the JVC have an MC phono stage?
If you were getting satisfactory playback levels, clean all connections and contacts in the signal path, from cartridge to RCA plugs, and make sure they are tight.

Cheers,

Thank you Alec. The sound level on play back is very ,very low.
I've checked all the connections and contacts in the signal path.Everything seems to be ok.
I've used a different receiver today,a Sony this time ,and the sound still very very low.
Also I 've been trying to record the sound from the Pioneer turntable directly to an Akai reel to reel -same low sound from turntable.

Thank you again Alec. I 've made it to work ok!!!
I believe the problem was on a RCA connector.

Now,regarding the Moving Coil cartridge .What I have now on my turntable is a wrong one (it is a 6MC ). The right one for my Pioneer PL-950 should be PC-5MC. The 6MC is in good condition . Should I replace it with the right one? Would the playback sound be better with a 5MC cartridge ?

I don't know why you call it the wrong cartridge. You can use a Pioneer, Shure, Audio-Technica, Denon, Benz, Dynavector, or any other standard cartridge. If the 5MC was the original, perhaps it was ugraded to the 6MC.
Pioneer cartridges would be very hard to find, anyway.
If it sounds good, enjoy it.
BTW, the Alignment Protractors link at the top will give you the tools to make sure your cartridge is optimally positioned for the best sound.

Cheers,
Alec

Thank you .Obvouisly I know nothing about the turntable. But I would do the best to learn more about this Pioneer PL-950 because I like it :). Now I see what you mean by many other cartridges could work very well on my turntable. I see the four wires coming from the cartridge are going straight to a small board and to the RCA connectors. Nothing else in their "way" . So ,it is nothing wrong to have a 6MC instead of the original one 5MC.
I have to get an User's Manual and maybe a Service Manual for my turntable in case :)
Thank you one more time.

The library has the service manual for the 930. This may be similar enough to be useful.

Any other similar deck will have similar set-up instructions.
Keep your records clean.

What you can find , new in a store, for under $300, is not to be recommended. Get the Pioneer properly set up, and enjoy it, until you feel like spending at least double that in a store.

Cheers,
