Best new cartridge for a Dual 1009 - 1st post

Postby Alexdad54 » 16 Nov 2008 21:17

Greetings all,
I just discovered and joined the group, wish I'd known about it years ago...
I have just retreieved from long term storage my vintage Grundig KS590 console stereo that has a Dual 1009 TT built into it. I downloaded the owners manual and other docs from this site ( and now have to translate them!) but before going any further with setting it up I thought I would ask for suggestions here for a new cartridge for the turntable as the one it has is the original from 1964.

The Shure M75 and M97 have been mentioned here but I don't really know which (of any brand) would be the best option. The console produces beautiful sound via its tube amp and the 8 speakers that are in it and I want to try and ensure that I get the maximum quality possible from it.
many thanks an apologies for the long post,
Dave

The Dual 1009 will accept 1/2" cartridges with a weight of 1-12 grams.

Since the Dual 1009 is does not have exceptionally high performance, I think I would consider an Ortofon 5E cartridge. They are reasonably priced and do have a clear sound. I am sure you would be pleased.

Thanks for your advice. I googled the Ortofon 5E and came up with the Ortofon OM 5E Phono Cartridge on Needledoctor. Would this be the one you recommend?
Another question, if I may. The price of the Ortofon is $5 more than the Shure M97xe on another major website. Would the Shure be overkill for the 1009? The only reason I mention it is that Dual and Shure seem to be mentioned together here a lot....

The Shure 97xe should work as well as the Ortofon. No sense spending more for the OM5! :)

$55.00 for the Ortofon OM 5E is not that bad of a price. You may wish to shop around, there are deep discounts to be had.
Either way, with either cartridge (Shure or Ortofon) you'll be happy with your decision. Both manufacturers build nice products.

Thanks to both of you for your replies, much appreciated! I've looked around a bit and couldn't find the deep discounts on the OM 5E. The Shure still seems to be the cheaper bet at $50 +free shipping and it also comes with a free protractor and other goodies. The Ortofon will be my fallback if I don't care for the sound out of the Shure.
thanks again! Now if I could only find an English user's manual for the 1009.....:)

Hi and thanks to DaveB! Now I don't have to try and work my way through all the technical German or pay for the various user and service manuals for the 1009 that I've seen for sale on several different sites and Ebay...
cheers,
D

Alexdad,

If really in need I'd gladly translate the German
parts you fail to understand into reasonable English:
Just gimme a PM indicating which portions of PDF
file, OK?

As alternative to carts mentioned: Check either
Nagaoka/Osawa MP10 or its elliptical stylus slightly
biggger brother, the MP15. Good sounds for a TT of
the age of your 1009....

Good Luck with your restauration project!!

Thank you for your help! I am going to hook everything up this weekend and see what happens. I also have the Michael Fremer dvd to self-educate myself about setting up the stylus with the Shure stylus and scale ready to go...now here's hoping the turntable doesn't need any work!
Also thanks for your offer Jos, I'll send you a PM if I get stuck!
cheers,
Dave

I'm looking for a mono cartridge (MM) for my 1019. Any recommendations? I was thinking of a Grado Prestige Mono ME+ or an Ortofon OM D25M which costs only half the price...

Is Ortofon OM5E OK as well for Dual 1009? Here I have a lot of offers for Ortofon OM5E, but only one for Ortofon 5E. thanks

OM5E is good. 5E is just short for OM5E.

Cheers,
Alec
