Hi

I have an Ariston RD80sl and love it. It is equipped with a Grace 707 graphite arm and sounds lovely. Setup is essentially the same as for the Linn LP12 ( in other words a pain in the posterior ) but the results are well worth the effort.

EDIT:

I think the other is an RD11 ( not RD 110 which I have never heard of) which is reportedly an even better unit than the RD80sl !

Both units are superb but the RD11 is the one to keep.

I suspect that the armboards are fine. Ariston used a type of plastic sheeting on the armboards and plinth that tended to expand unevenly and deform over time giving an appearance of warping to the plinth and/or armboard. If this is what you are seeing It is the plastic overlay and neither the plinth nor the armboard that are deformed.

Can you explain in what way your armboards look knackered?

Good morning High river, hope all is well with you today.the armboards are plastic as you say with 2 allen screws hlding them in situ onto the sub chasis, with a thin slice of cork, between them. the boards are deformed a bit and where the screws go, they are cracked, as if over tightened. I was thinking of replacing it with one cut from mdf, or , a friend of mine says he can machine one from a block of aluminium. also does the motor need lubricating. one more prob, when trying to play at 45rpm the belt keeps droping off.
Thanks
Gary
Ps just read that maybe springs are getting tired, and to replace then with linn ones what dou you think

Gary,

Linn springs work well in Thorens turntables; but I don't know about Ariston. If the dimensions and compliance are different to the originals they can be a bit of a pain to fit though :(

I've used MDF for making new armboards with great success, it's a nice lossy material that pretty rigid and easy to cut. Aluminium is a thought; but it'll need some carefull work to stop it ringing. You don't always want to couple a tonearm to the turntable that rigidly anyway...

If the belt is slipping off it probably just needs a new belt...

Have fun,

Steph

I successfully fitted LP12 springs in my RD-40, though I kept the original ruber garments, because the lins were too narrow to fit.

absolutely not!
The only Linn dealer in my country also asked for absurd sum.
There is a listing on eBay which is renewed periodic, that's were I ordered from.
right now there's no listing but keep searching, it'll be relisted soon enough.

search for "linn springs" or just "linn"

good luck
