What arm do you have on your LP12?

a way of life

FR 64 (can't remember if it's an S or fx - lost the manual). Supposedly way too heavy for the Linn but works fine and handles AT0C9/ML11 a treat.

Hello, my 1990 Sondek was purchased with an Ittok LVIII and it is still in use.

I was not convinced to step to the Ekos for financial reasons, the Ekos SE convinced me definitely to stick to the Ittok.....

I have a current spec LP12 now with Keel SE, Ekos, Arkiva, Lingo, Linto.
This deck started life brand new in 1986 with Valhalla, Basic LVX plus and Arcam P77 cartridge. The Arm was changed to second hand Ittok in 2001 with new Dynavector Karat 17D2 and then to Ecos/Arkiva in 2007.

At each change - massive increase in detail from the records.

On my office LP12 (a 1979 model) but now circussed, Hercules 2 and chassis mods, I have SME Series IV and Dyanavector DV20. This set up certianly gives the current 'Linn only' set up a run for its money. The SME does work well, despite the comments of weight etc.. You just need more patience in getting the suspension springs tensioned correctly.

I purchased my 1977 vintage Linn in 1979, fitted with a Grace 707 Black arm and a Grado cartridge.

It languished in my basement for about 10 yrs before resurrection in 2001. The tonearm wires (actually one channel) went bad; I fitted a Rega RB600 with a Linn Adikt. Other changes include the Cirkus, Trampolin 1, Lingo 2.

My LP12 came with an Akito arm. I replaced it with an Ekos (used) after a few years. My cartridge back then was a Goldring 1022, and the difference was not remarkable, but the sound was more controlled. And I wanted an arm that would do justice to future cartridges. Today it serves well with my Klyde.

Originally an Akito I, from my old Axis, and now a Mission Mechanic
It's the one of the last of the Mechanics, very nice :D

The tone arm is fitted with an ARKIV B. I'm very happy with it :D

Another Mission arm here, my LP12 carries a Mission 774SM which I think was manufactured by the same firm as the Mechanic (and Zeta arms AFAIK). Cart is a Denon DL-103, though at the moment neither are doing much due to power supply death!

Arm history

Postby Blurboy » 12 Feb 2009 22:06

My Linn started with an Ittok which my brother-in-law now owns - I will have to try and wrench it off him one day  . I had to down grade to a LVX Basik which was crap. Then I came across a Zeta and partnered it with a Koestu Black which was truly superb.
I've now hopefully sourced another LP12 and will fit an heavily modified OL1 and a Denon DL110. Can't wait :D

My 1986 LP12 came with an S-shaped Basik. That was replaced 2 years ago with an OL-modded RB300 and I've got to say I find the combination of the Rega's slightly dry tonality with the Linn's undoubted lushness is really good. Plenty of bang for not much buck as far as I can tell. never been anything less than happy with the pairing.
Granted I do now look at OL Silvers and up with avaricious eyes though....

Souther

Postby dave brown » 23 Mar 2009 22:43

Souther SLA-II. I've never run across anybody else using this arm on an LP-12, but it sounds good. Not easy to set up and a bit of a pain to cue up and turn records over. Currently have a Sumiko Blue Point Special mounted in the Souther.

Bought the Linn in 1986 with a Basik arm and cartridge then went to the Souther arm a couple of years later.

This is actually my second Souther arm. The original was stolen when I shipped back to the U.S. from Germany in 1991. Also gone was an Ortofon cartridge which had worked well in the setup.

When I got the deck it had an LVX Basic.

Eventually replaced with a Rega RB 300 modified with the Michell Tecnoweight which is a great improvement over the standard Rega counterweight.

The RB 300 is a definite move in the right direction compared to the LVX IMO.

Basik

Postby cultjake » 13 Apr 2009 17:01

Currently running my '82 with a Basik LVX+ and an Ortofon OM10.

I used to have a Magnepan Unitrac, but the bearings were shot and I couldn't get it to run.

I've considered going to a Rega, but for now, the current rig
sounds good enough.
