78s stylus for Shure M3D?

Postby keithclarke » 25 Aug 2004 16:49

Have just got a Goldring GL75 with Shure M3D cartridge and have worked out that I need an N3D stylus. But is there a 78 stylus that will fit this cartridge?

78s stylus for Shure M3D?

Postby finkerbell » 25 Aug 2004 20:32

To the best of my knowledge, there was no wide-groove stylus for the M3D.

While the M3D was great in its day, I can't imagine using one now. Shure and Stanton/Pickering both have modern cartridges for 78s which are reasonably priced.

Thank you. If I want to fit a new cartridge, how will I know what is suitable for the GL75? Forgive basic question, but this is the first time I've had a turntable in a very long time. I need to find soemthing at the budget end of things.

You could get a Shure M92E, or a M70BX. They both accept the N78S stylus for 78rpm shellacs.
Or you could go for a AudioTechnica AT 91/78 shellac set.

Give a check to the arm bearings, anyway.

Many thanks. I'm afraid I wouldn't know an arm bearing if it punched me on the nose, but I have followed your advice on the AudioTechnica AT91. Not sure where I'll find an affordable 78s stylus for it, though.

The needle you'd need is the ATN78.

If you are in Europe, please look here:

http://www.phonophono.de (search for 78 cartridges)

In UK I think you could try Musonic or Mantra, in USA Needledepot, Needledoctor or LPgear...

(this is not an exaustive list, of course)

About the bearings, well it's a long story.. could try to send you some notes, if you think that would be useful. Just drop me a line.

Cheers, Piero

Thanks, Piero. I think I'll steer clear of the bearings for fear of wrecking the thing!

I'm in the UK, where Mantra doesn't seem to do the ATN78. I tracked it down at Musonic, but am surprised at the cost - £20. I could have bought a whole warehouse of styluses for that, the last time I was using vinyl. For 78s perhaps I'll just carry on ruining the old stylus that came with the deck (it has two separate cartridge headshells). It certainly plays them OK.

Hi Keith,

the ATN78 is rated 20 euro at phonophono.de, something like 13 pounds, but you'd have to add the shipping charges...

Being in UK you could give a glance at http://www.diamondstylus.co.uk - not original styli, however (or they are?).

Well, good luck with 78,
Piero

The Shure M92E (current model) not work properly with this type of headshell. I tryed... but

This cartridge has or own threads (spiral nuts in a holding bar) and the headshell of GL75 too. This cartridge ajust only in "naked" holes like the universal bayonet mount of S tonearms.

The same problem in Thorens tonearm and others.

True, but you can solve the problem by drilling to to proper size the headshell subplate to remove the threading and then use a couple of screws to fix the m92 threads (the screws heads could need some filing to fit the space between the subplate and the headshell).

If someone wants to experiment, I have a subplate or two availables, just drop me a line
