Help with TD-147 Pulley

Hello,

I am new to Vinyl Engine and am throughly impressed. What a great resource!

I brought home a TD-147 the other day only to find that the motor pulley is damaged beyond repair. Having purused this forum it seems pulleys are not easy to come by. In any case, I am interested in purchasing a pulley if anyone knows of a source. Alternatively, I know a gunsmith that I might be able to convince to make some pulleys. Does anyone have a dimensioned drawing?

You are in the US right so you need 60Hz pulley I got one from Dave over it http://www.vinylnirvana.com/ send him a email and see if he has one you can buy .Robert

Thanks for the lead. I've sent ~20 emails since posting and Vinyl Nirvana was one that responded. Unfortunately, no luck.

Last night I reassembled the pulley sans 45 rpm wheel. The TT now operates at 33 rpm which is the only speed I need. This will have to do until a complete pulley assembly becomes available.

BTW, I am quite impressed by the TD-147's performance and tonal balance. Bass is not as prominent as my TD-160 w/ upgraded bottom panel, but better balanced. This might be the difference in cartridge....

I don't want to state the obvious but wouldn't it be easier to go to a machine shop and have one made (probably in ally)?

I saw your ad WTB compatible Thorens, but I don't really see the point in buying a complete TT (even non-working) just for one part.

Sounds like your gunsmith might be the best source - is the old pulley so badly damaged that he can't lifty dimensions from it?

Good questions.....

Truth be told I have 2 Thorens TT and get great enjoyment from doing my own repairs. Having extra parts available represents more opportunities to fix additional TT's. Pssst, don't tell my very gracious and ever suffering wife.

Going the gunsmith route may be possible, I'll be seeing him this evening. The pulley assembly consists of 4 pcs; two pulleys, the slip clutch and a coil spring. The slip clutch is the damaged part.

The only way to get dimensions would be to take them from my TD-160. This means having both TT's down for an indeterminate length of time. Finally, the slip clutch is the only piece that does not lend its self to tunrning on a lathe. It will have to be made on a milling machine. This last part I discoverd last night after disassembling the motor pulley assembly.

What is the slip clutch ? As there are 4 pulley parts that go on the motor .On my TD166mkII I only use the 60Hz 45 pulley on top of a 50Hz 45rpm pulley both upside down all powered by a Preo-ject Speedbox mkII and this set-up works prefect speed is dead on 0.02%+/- you should think about get one for your TD147.Robert

Hi,

The slip clutch is the round piece with 3-4 splines that sits above the spring. As I understand it, the clutch pushs the 45 rpm pulley up and provides some slip when the motor starts.

Your comments about the Pro-ject Speedbox sound interesting. Is it a variable frequency power supply? I've read that the TD-147 motor speed is line frequency controlled.

Yes it is a variable frequency power supply it runs at 44.33Hz for 33 1/3rpm and 60Hz for 45rpm at 16.38 ~volts the Speedbox will work great powering your TD147 and as for what you call the slip clutch that is just part of the 33 1/3 pulley the pulley will work without the splines as I said in my last post.The pulley I use is 60Hz 45rpm pulley on top of a 50Hz pulley with the spring in the middle and both upside down

I looked into the pro-ject Speedbox MKII and it looks like a great enhancement regardless of the pulley issue. I'm off to order a Speedbox. Thanks for your help solving my problem!

Hi,
When you hook up the Speedbox mkII you must use the 45rpm pulley . I have found that went using the Speedbox put 45 pulley upside down and cut off the splines on the 33 1/3 pulley and use the spring. With this set up you can take off all the stock speed but leave the switch for on -off and looks or you can like me and put a sminple on-off switch but if you do you will have to cut a bigger hole in the motor plate.To have a look at what I did to my TD166mkII go to:

Thanks for the description of how you implemented the Speedbox MkII on your Thorens. I'm going to order a Sppedbox this week and will get in touch if I have any questions.

BTW, Very nice plinth and cabinet for your TD-166 MkII.
