How much did your TT(s) cost?

the good, the bad and the ugly

Postby unclemarkle » 17 Jul 2007 23:38

..and don't forget that $50 out of that $55 was the new cartridge!

I lost a day of my life to working the BBQ stand at the school fete, but scoring the TT at the second hand stall more thaqn made up for it.

what do you think

Postby loheswaran » 23 Jul 2007 22:34

I have the following tables:

Amazon Model One £2500
Moerch DP6 arm £950
shelter 501(2) £550, or
transfiguration temper V £2200
Nordost tonearm cable £700
whest phono stage

currently brewing in my workshop is an EMT 950 - been mechanically overhauled, now needs:
cosmetics
tonearm (probably EMT 929 - tempted with a breur)
EMT TSD 15 cartridge
STX15 step up transformer

I am itching to get the EMT 950 up and running - gorgeous

I got my first turntable a week ago for playing record from my grnadmother who past away recently. What did it cost? Nothing, I got a Akai ap306 from my brother (very nice man!) in law with a Nagaoka JT322 for free.

I uploaded pictures of my TT on the gallery.

There is not much information on an Akai ap306 on the web. Have you got any?

The vinyl replay cost is rising (as ever) but I'm currently with

Deck - 1986 Linn LP12 bought in 1996 when no-one wanted vinyl for £200 (bargain!)
+ Hercules power supply (just installed after Valhalla finally blew) £200
Tonearm - Origin Live modded Rega RB300 £400
+ replacement armboard £25
Cart - Sumiko Blue Point No 2 £140
Phono stage - Graham Slee Era Gold V £480

Total cost then of £1445 to get the sound from record to amps (though I do think I need to upgrade the cart).
Not bad I reckon for something that sounds a helluva lot better than my Roksan CD player (okay it is more than double the price...)

One zillion US dollars because I bought enough tools to build a house, paint a car and launch a missile. Then, I screwed it all up a dozen times, and kept changing my mind when I didn't screw up something. Finally it was built, and sounded to suit me, so I started building a different one. It is totally off-budget with no end in sight.

Whoever said that building your own is cheaper, is a liar.

Oh yeah, I forgot about tools and previous turntables I've built as part of the learning cost. Fortunately, most of my tools were already paid for from luthier work. I did need more sandpaper, glue and screws, which added some to the cost.

True, but you have a better chance of coming up with exactly what you want, and the potential of greater performance. Besides, who'd want to miss all this fun!:P

Dunlop Systemdek II £120

ADC ALT1 Free from a friend who had in turn been given an SME arm

A&R Cambridge P77 £40

Dunlop Record Clamp £10 (went AWOL many years ago in a house move)

Recently bought new Dunlop belt for £18 (think I might have been overcharged as somebody else does them on Ebay for about £8)

Total £188

Inexpensive and has been a gem for a quarter of a century - Still looks great too.

Hello All

This is an outrageous amount to spend on a turntable but it had to be done. When you listen to this turntable it makes your ears melt.

Garrard 501 Inspiration (Stainless Steel Construction including Stainless Steel Aero Flux Motor)
SME V in Black
Dynavector XX2 MK11

Total front end cost 9500.00 GBP, 19,080.31 USD, 13,549.91 EUR

Technis SP10MkII--$215
Plywood plinth--$35
SME 3012 Series II--$396
Denon DL103--$150
Audio Technica ATP-12 arm--$77
Denon DL102--$162

Maybe not the best system for around $1,000, but not too bad.

Next too nothing, I found my TD 150 in a fleemarket for €5 but when I arrived home it starts to smell the plinth was full of mold. I have too built my own plinth cost for the plinth €11. Tonearm had I found on another fleemarket with an rega planar 3 for €10 sold the rega (€80) an keept the tonearm Stax UA 9N. Cartridge is a Shure M75 I get for free and two new needles for €10 some bits and bobbs all cost me in total € 40.

Hi,

Thorens TD-124 - $5.00 - Found at a swapmeet

Thorens TD-124 - Free - with the original templates and instructions. From a friend who was parting out a console - He only wanted the Mac amp....

Thorens TD-165 - $60.00 - included new stylus.

Nakamichi Dragon - $750.00 - got this along with a Dragon cassette deck. Also $750.00. Both mint, with their original boxes.

Metzner Starlight transcription TT - $25.00

Sansui P-L95R front loading - $25.00. Just for the novelty. Like loading a laserdisc player.

Original AR turntable (pre-XA modfel): $58 US in 1961, cartridge not included.

This past year I bought a new cartridge and platter mat, and they cost more than the turntable's original price.

Holy Moley, man! One of the original AR turntables! Oh, my! That is something special! You've got the double-engine version, of course. Best wishes, and happy listening to you!
Hats off,
