Turntable noise (HELP PLEASE!)

Postby FinalRound » 19 Sep 2012 02:19

Hello, this is my first post on this forum and I'm afraid it's with a problem.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Phir9_iDhck

This is my turntables (Numark TT200s), they are make a kind of squeaking noise whenever they play a record (the records on the deck in the video are DVS control vinyls) does anyone know what the problem is? Or is it meant to make that noise?

Cheers, FR.

There's just so many things it could be it's hard to diagnose. For one thing the cartridge is so far out of alignment it's a wonder it plays at all from the brief time I could see it. I don't know that much about them myself but it sounds like a noisy motor. The specs on that are less than stellar as it is and will be noisy no matter how well it's setup. With rumble at 50db with weighting it means it will be noisy no matter how well everything else functions. However it shouldn't be that obvious unless you have the volume up really high and if you intend to use this for DJ applications it would be far too noisy IMHO. I'd either return it and try again or go for something better. If you're looking for DJ applications you'd be better off trying to track down a used Technics 1200 and work from there. There's lots of threads about the Technics 1200's so that shouldn't be a problem.

Good luck!

That is a straght arm designed for scratching and no use for hifi. If you continue to use this for normal playback it will destroy your records. For hifi use you need a TT with an offset arm. This arm will put the stylus at a horrible ange in the grooves towards the end of the record and to be honest it will never be at a good angle. Unless you are using it for scratching just sell it and get a used Technics sl1200.

Thank you for the quick replies :)
I don't think it's the motor because it only makes that sound when the needle is on the record.

As for the tone arm, would it make it better if I bought some S-Shaped tone arms?

If you have a noisy motor, ie with a bearing with excessive rumble, it will be heard hen the stylus is on the record..... due to the motor vibration travelling through the platter/vinyl/stylus

So how would I go about checking if I have a noisy motor.

It does sound like the motor whining, do you have a stethoscope, probably not ?

Is it a new TT ? If it was one of mine I would be considering lubrication of the motor bearing.

It's a pair of TT200's
Any advice on lubricating the motor bearing? :) Like what to use to lubricate it etc?
Could it be anything to do with the tonearm balancing? Because to me it sounds like it's pushing down too hard of the record which is causing to sound like it's lightly scratching it.

I'd use sewing machine oil on the motor bearings.

Have you set the vertical tracking force in accordance with the manufacturers recommendation ? When it's playing have a look at the stylus and you will see if it is being forced up ito the cartridge or the cartridge is rubbing on the vinyl.

If they are available for your turntable and you use your table for hifi not scratching then yes s shaped arm will be a big improvement and your records will last longer too.
