OH NO! whats wrong with my DL110

Postby raceofrobots » 02 Aug 2012 02:41

Just got it in from cometsupply.. I hooked it up according to this using the supplied smaller wires that came with the turn table...

http://www.mcmelectronics.com/product/D ... 9410036500

I hear a warping sound and a sort of popping.. left to right on every other beat.. its louder than the music.. and its there even while not even playing anything! something is seriously wrong...

Its a DP300F TT, what do I do ?

The wires and the pins on the cartridge are colour-coded. Did you match them?

Cheers,
Alec

I dont know how the color code should be on the headshell for the DP300F .. but is that generally the case when getting these kinds of symptoms ?

Did you remove the wires from the headshell? That pic looks right.
I think we're barking up the wrong tree.

Hi raceofrobots. How very strange. The sound is on both channels, and pops alternate between sides, and the warping sound sweeps - ? Could you describe the sound in more detail ?

One thing I've come across that might fit the description is when testing accidentally unstable pre-amps, and a radio frequency oscillation was in play. In this case, grounding might hold the clue, if it is due to such things. Cart bodies generally have internal ground connections on the green wire, if it's internally necessary. Perhaps the external green wire connection is somehow not good, or perhaps the tonearm ground connection isn't good ? There's often a seperate ground connection wire for the tonearm which is meant to connect to preamp ground, which sometimes is joined to the green wire at the armbase, is this connected at the preamp end ?

What is the preamp ?

A friend of mine borrowed my Denon DL-110 and had an identical problem with the cartridge. His AT 440 was fine but the Denon had a pulsing beat to it, sorry to say that we never did get to the bottom of it and assumed it to be a capacitance issue :(

Any sort of noise such as described is abnormal, and could originate in some internal damage. After eliminating the possibility of problems with the headshell connections and other possibilities along the way, and including the preamp, the remaining possibility is to get the cartridge replaced.

Is the tonearm cable connected to the MM Phono preamp inputs (NOT the MC inputs)?
Does the cantilever look straight and correctly aligned, including azimuth?
Is the tracking pressure set to the specified value?
Are there any connectivity issues with the tonearm cable, or the headshell?
Best wishes,

I doubt an internal cartridge fault with such symptoms, nor an external capacitance issue..........

Im using the built in preamp and dont have a phono preamp... likely a Grounding issue? how do I ground it ?
The preamp is rated for a MM, but I thought high output MC carts could work too. I went swapping around the wires and cant find a solution..

hmm sounds more like a clipping then a pop, and all the physical alignment parts cant be affecting it.. I mean it does it without even touching a record.

Are you by chance using a Marantz amplifier? The Denon works perfectly on my setup but my friend had the popping sound. I am sure I have seen this reported somewhere else as an issue with the Denon.

Yes, that has to be a big clue.

Does the TT have a seperate ground wire, usually with an open spade connector on the free end ? This would normally connect to a thumb-screw type post on the back of the preamp/amp..........is that all in place ? If no, does connecting it have an effect ? Or disconnecting it ?

It could be as simple as there being either an extra or missing ground connection, and the remedy to provide or remove it, in the right place. Perhaps !

Does connecting a wire to the amp ground terminal and touching the tonearm or green cart wire with the other end alter the sound ? Does touching the tonearm with your finger make a difference (obviously not while playing a record !) ??
