Views on tonearm for a new Gyrodec SE

Postby deejaybee » 29 Jul 2012 17:06

I am just in the process of upgrading my turntable. My system as it stands is a Pro-ject Xperience plus ortofon rondo blue, black cube SE phono stage, Vincent SV-234 amp(thats a solid state model), Vienna Accoustic Bethoven Grand speakers with QED genesis silver spiral cables.

The turntable is very good at its price level, but since i changed the amp and speakers early this year I can hear the limitations of the deck, and of course it is always good to have more of a good thing!

I have read many reviews recently and narrowed my choice down to a few for audition. So far I have listened to the Gyrodec, the Orbe and also the Avid Diva. Out of these I have pretty much made my mind up to go for a Gyrodec (in black)as being the right sort of sound i am after and the best value for money. Interestingly I auditioned a gyrodec and orbe back-to-back with exactly the same arm / cartridge (thanks to the guys at Walrus systems) and whilst it was evident that the orbe was better, it wasn't that much better that I thought it was worth double the money of the gyrodec.

I also have had a direct comparison between the avid diva and a gyrodec. The diva does sound nice and I can see how this might work well for some, but for me the bass is a bit too over-blown and I don't think it will work that well in my system.

So anyway, I am now clear on the deck but not quite so sure about the arm. My original thought was between a Technoarm, which would have been the cheapest arm choice with a good performance, or an SME 309, which although it would be twice the price seems to have been very well recommended for use on the gyrodec. Unfortunately I have not been able to audition the gyrodec /309 combination, but I would be prepared to go for this based on the various recommendations it has been given. The only curve ball is that yesterday one dealer recommended the new origin live zephyr as being a much better match with the added advantage of it being about £250 cheaper than the 309. The zephyr is a fairly new model and there doesn't seem to be much info around on it yet, and again I would be unlikely to get a demo on this before buying?

If it helps, the cartridge I will be using is probably going to be the ortofon cadenza bronze as I have been offered one at a difficult to refuse price 9although in the short term I may be using the rondo blue).

So the choices are:

1. Michell Technoarm - a good performar at the price and excellent value for money, but will it do full justice to a Cadenza Bronze?
2. SME 309 - almost a no brainer, but there have been a few who have criticised it as being too clinical (but that may not be a problem with the bronze as it has a slightly warm sound)
3. Origin Live Zephyr - bit of an unkown quantity. Could be a bargain, but there seems to be quite polarised views of OL products generally and not really sure if this is a good idea or not? I'm inclined to pass this over if I can't get a demo or get some input from someone who has used one.

Would be interested to here peoples views.

Thanks,

Dave

SME 309, without a doubt.

But then I would say that - three guesses which arm is on the Gyro SE that I'm currently enjoying?

I run a Zephyr (bought used in mint condition at 40% of the list price) on my Transrotor and it's a fine arm. Setup can be a bit finicky (with the anti-skate weight and very tiny cartridge connectors); just don't rush it and take your time. Soundwise it's very detailed, a bit lively (compensated for by other components in my system, so nicely balanced now) and exercises lots of control over the cartridge. Build quality seems to be a concern, but mine looks nicely finished and tight. So far I'm pleased with it.

You may also want to consider the Audiomods arm. There's one for sale on this very forum now...

Hi, 309, I have this on my Michell Gyro (Upgraded), and it is great, I have used a lot of different MC cartridges with it, and would seriously suggest that what ever cartridge you choose, make sure its compliant with the 309. You can ring SME and speak to the techy there (Also named Brian) and he has a list of compliance that suits the 309. Luckily all mine are ok, (Benz Micro, AT33EV, Sumiko, Dynavector,Denon) It will sound great and you will just love it.

Another vote for the 309. Yes it's the most expensive but remember the old saying, "the quality remains long after the price is forgotten...", or something like that :)

Just my 2p/2c worth.

I have the (unloved by many) SME III. SME gear is first rate for build quality, backup and they're easy to setup. While sound quality is for many the most important consideration, perhaps it's worth bearing in might they're great bits of kit as well as sounding brilliant. I don't know if anybody would call a £1000+ arm a bargain but when you see what you get I think the 309 is great value.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I have now taken the plunge and ordered a black gyrodec SE and an SME 309.

I would have liked the opportunity to have listened to an OL arm but unfortunately that was not possible. The general concensus was that OL arms generally have quite a "lively" charcter and were not the ideal match for the gyrodec. Also the quality of OL products still does not seem to be 100% whereas there is no question about the quality of SME.

Can't wait to get it now, but unfortunately I probably won't receive anything until mid-September as the factory is currently closed for summer break. I will give some first impressions after I get it.

Update - I have now got my new turntable, I picked it up from Walrus Systems last weekend (excellent service by the way, would definitely recommend them). So far I am very pleased with this. The sound even "stright out the box" is very good and quite a big improvement on the project xperience (just as well i guess!), so hopefully it will only get better over time as is used a bit more.

I did have some misgivings about spending this much money on a turntable set-up, but having experienced the result I am very pleased that i did. Without being funny, the sound I am getting in my own system is even better than I was hearing in the various demos I had, so that is a good result.

So I now have a project xperience x-pack with upgraded Rondo blue cartridge surplus to requirements if anyone is interested - very good performance at its price point, I would accept £550 for this if anyone on here is interested?

regards,

Dave

Glad your new deck is working well. Although you've dropped a bit of cash on it, it'll last a lifetime and if you ever needed to sell it even in 10 or 20 years you'd get the money back.

Which cartridge did you go for?

The cartridge I have is a Cadenza Bronze. I got it at a bargain price (still not cheap though!), but the sound really is good even though it is not "run in" yet. It certainly is a step up from my Rondo Blue even though that is a good cartridge itself.

I have seen the Cadenza bronze described as having a warmer presentation than the blue, but so far I would not say the sound I am getting is like that, it is just got a lot more authority and detail without emphasising any particular part of the frequency range.
