Trading in old worn-out Denon 304 for new one -- possible?

Postby lennyw » 22 Jul 2012 22:53

Hi all,

I'm in the process of looking for a new cart for my recently purchased Gyrodec/SME3009II-Imp and have been thinking about going for the same again -- ie a Denon DL304. I had stopped using my older TT a while ago, as it wasn't sounding "right" and I felt sure this was due to the cart (ie stylus) being worn out (I must have used it for more than a thousand hours now).

I noticed in the instruction manual to the Denon that it says I can return the cart to my dealer and get a new one "for only the cost of a replacement stylus."

Is this (still) true? How much should I be looking at paying?

Thanks for your advice!

Unfortunately I don't know of any exchange scheme any more, certainly Mantra in the UK used to but not any more.
Perhaps you could get it retipped?
In the UK that would be someone like Expert.

Expert ( info@expertstylus.co.uk ) provide a retip service as follows.....

Model: Denon DL 304,

We thank you for your enquiry and confirm we offer a complete overhaul and re-tipping service for virtually all makes of moving coil cartridge. We manufacture a range of diamonds and, for top end cartridges, re-tip using our Paratrace profile diamond, ensuring maximum retrieval of information from groove modulations.

Initially, we shall need to carry out a detailed examination and assuming we find the cartridge repairable, our charges to carry out a complete overhaul to include materials as necessary and auditioning will be GBP £291.00. Should we find serious damage to the coils or suspension and we are unable to supply replacement parts, then the cartridge will be deemed beyond repair and an alternative make of cartridge offered in part exchange.

Please note, we are currently fully booked with orders until mid September. Assuming you are prepared to wait, then please confirm your full name, postal address and daytime telephone number upon receipt of which you will be advised a computerised booking date when to forward your cartridge.

Should you miss your music and are without a standby cartridge, you may like to know we offer a wide range of top end cartridges at very competitive prices. This offer is only available to existing clients. Please ask for details.
Regards

Kelvin

I found out something similar here in DE. At 399EUR for a new one, I guess that's the best (or simplest) option.
Thanks for the info.
