Shure V15 TYPE III vs Shure M44MC

Postby visualine » 23 Jul 2012 09:19

When I purchased my Thorens TD150 it came with 2 headshells each fitted with Shure M44MC cartridges, but neither had a decent styli. I also owned a Shure V15 TYPE III so I fitted this to one of the headshells. I then purchased decent replacement styli from Ed Saunders on-line (http://www.edsaunders.com/shurestylus.htm - he apparently crafted the originals for Shure). An Elliptical .2 X .7 diamond stylus for the V15 and an Elliptical .3 X .7 diamond stylus for the M44MC that was slighly less costly. Now from what I read here and elsewhere the V15 should be the superior option. However I find the opposite when listening the the two. The M44MC is much more responsive and fuller in tonality and I have to increase amp volume when I place the V15 on the tone arm. I find this odd given the cost variable and reputation. Is it possible that the V15 Cart is faulty? Is there a recommendation from you knowledgeable lot for a replacement that will not require my taking out a mortgage on my home? Thanks for any feedback.

The V 15 Type III is lower output for starters. Nothing wrong with it. Some people like the M 44 line, I do for vintage discs and for transcription tonearms. Ed did not create the original styli for Shure, Shure Brothers usually made or sourced their own styli.

I've also discovered that you need to run the Ed Saunders replacement Styli at 1.5g VTF for 20-30 Hrs until the suspension is properly 'run-in'. After that, you can reduce the VTF down to 1.2g or so (where mine is now) whereupon the sound quality is indistinguishable (to my ears) from an original VN35E.

This was done after discussing available options with "kaleigh101", the eBay shop owner... Very helpful people 8)

The reason your Shure V15 doesn't sound as good as the M44 is because of the stylus you bought....
