I need some help with my first turntable (Impro PE 3048)

Ok so i found this turntable at this small antique shop, and the price on it was 25 but I asked for it for 15 and the guy didnt argue, so i dont know if that says anything about the shape its in, or if its even a good turntable to begin with.

Im new here so im not sure about these things.

Its seems to be working alright as of right now. This red and black cable thing is coming out of the back of it and i plugged those into the red and white auxiliary ports on the back of my stereo to see if it made any sound. It played very very quietly in the right speaker (red) but nothing came out of the left (black). Im assuming that is what a pre amp is for, so that it plays at normal volume?. Also there was a little bit of music coming from the turntable so i dont know what thats about. The red and black cables are attached to the machine, and ive never really seen red and black cables before so should i find a pre amp that has red and black ports or what? (sorry if i dont know what im talking about)

Also there is a third wire coming from the back that seems to be ripped or broken. Im not sure what it does or did. You can see it in one of the pictures of me holding up the cables.

It has an audio technica cartridge, but I didn't ask how old it was so I guess I should get that replaced right?

I know they're just pictures but could anybody tell if there was anything that needed fixing or looking at from them?

If anybody has this turntable or knows about it or could just offer some assistance, i would really appreciate it.

sorry for noobing out!

My guess is that you've plugged the TT into a line level input. Is it labeled aux, CD or spare? If so what you need is a stand alone phono preamp. You can purchase one from around $30 to "How much did you say, are you serious?". It would be connected between the TT and that input.

Check one of the links below.

You can also do a Google search for phono preamp.

The use of Red and Black cables is to determine which is left and which is right. Red is always right.

The cartridge fitted is an Audio Technica AT-14Sa which is a very high quality moving magnet design fitted with a Shibata profile stylus. It's probably worth up to $100 if the stylus is good. It's a fairly high compliance design which cost around $180 in the early 80's and will sound it's best in a light arm. Frankly, I'd keep the cartridge and buy a much higher quality deck to use it on.

Very good find!

The turntable is a Perpetuum-Ebner 3048. It is very similar to a Dual, and was owned by Dual for part of its history. It should be a decent turntable.
The library has the service manual in German: http://www.edsaunders.com/reded.htm
Get a phono preamp, and you may be pleasantly surprised.

Yep its the aux port in the back of my stereo. but is there any reason to why i cant hear anything out of the other speaker? Will a pre amp fix that or are my cables faulty?

Look at the wires that connect the cartidge to the arm, they are prone to breakage.

I'm guessing this is the link Alec meant to provide (I've pasted something other than intended a few times myself!) http://www.vinylengine.com/ve_downloads ... ice_de.pdf

There's also an owners manual for a similar-appearing 3044, with an English section starting on p. 8. http://www.vinylengine.com/ve_downloads ... _de_fr.pdf

Best,
Mike

I am tempted to pick up a couple of those Red Ed styli for the Goldring in the NAD, though...

The third wire you mentioned is the Earth/Grounding wire. It is supposed to be bare without a plug. There will be an easy attachment Earth terminal on the Phono Stage (Preamp)you get.
Well done. Looks like a good one to me. Esp for the price of a few bucks, hahaha.

It is a very good turntable that is a rebadged version of the Dual 122# series. You can download english language manuals of 1224 and higher models from here and get going. Set the antiskate/bias according to the "eliptical" side of the markings.

As for the "only one channel" problem, most Dual and PE TT's are prone to corrosion between the headshell and the tonearm, where the cartridge is attached.
I would thouroughly clean all visible contacts with De-oxit and very fine grit (1200 or more) sand paper. Alec also recommends a pencil eraser, which is a softer method: the contact blades are silver plated and need looking shiny. Oxydation often blocks a good contact.
Good listening!

Cheers,

Hugh.
