Hi there,

It's not the number that's important, it's the quality!

I own three, two Linn Sondek LP12s plus a Beogram 6500 - covers most applications.

Probably around twenty. The two in current daily use in my studio are a Technics SP-15 with Jelco tonearm and a heavily modified SL-1200MK5. Both are 78 RPM capable, an essential feature for my needs.

I have a Technics SL-6 (direct drive linear tracker full auto) in the downstairs system. It's a very capable performer despite having zero 'snob appeal.'

Others that see occasional use in my studio are: JVC QL-A7, Pioneer PL-300, Pioneer PL-518, Kenwood KD-3070, and a Benjamin Miracord Elac. I'd put the QL-A7 in the number three spot in the pecking order. The Miracord is really very nice, I've got it set up with a Stanton 500, for spinning 78s. Should I ever encounter a 16 2/3 RPM record, the Miracord will handle it.

As you might gather, I have a preference for quartz-locked direct drive. Most of the belt drives I buy are refurbed and sold locally.

Nary a new one among my turntable collection.

Set up and in daily use - each with their own amps, cabling etc a Garrard 301 oil bearing, two Garrard 301 grease bearing models, a Micro Seiki BL-51, a Micro MR-711 and a B&O 4002 for high days and holidays.

Then, resting in the workshop rafters I have another two Garrard 301 oil bearing turntables.

During the past two years, I sold a Rega Planar MK 3, a Michell Syncro, a Dunlop Systemdek Transcription model, a Lenco L-75 and a Micro Seiki MB-18.

The cause of these sales was a serious kitchen fire the missus had, making me see the error of my ways...

At the moment I have four "proper" turntables: a JBE Series III with an SME 345 arm and van den Hul Frog cartridge, a stock Technics SL-1200mk2 with Goldring 910 cart, a reburbished and plinthless Garrard 401 and a reburbished and plinthless Technics SP10mkII. I've got a few Systemdeks and a couple of other decks for selling too.

The plan is to get the 401 into a plinth so I can sell the JBE. Then I'm going to get the SP10 into a plinth and sell the 1200. After that I'll do some careful side by side listening between the SP10 and the 401 and keep the one I like the most.

Whichever one I keep will have a second arm added to the plinth so I can have a lesser cartridge for lesser records.

Two and one half:

Revox B795 in pristine condition.
Rabco ST-7 in pristine condition.
Rabco ST-7 presently under the knife getting an arm/transport transplant.

The third unit will be cleaned and mothballed as a spare - run as-needed to keep everything working.

Out on permanent loan, not counted in the home inventory:

Revox B790
Rabco ST-8

I see a fair amount of "British Dudes" using the term "proper turntable" frequently yet what does that mean? Functioning? Accepted by your spouse? Not in the garage collecting dust? What?
