I shouldn't have spent what i did on these two,but I spent less than what other folks are paying for them.
This first one is just a hole in my Beastie vinyl discography, but apparently it's out of print because all the copies I've seen are pricey and it wasn't reissued with the other records in '09.

this one just had sentimental value to me.

In 1999 when my son was only a few months old, this release had just came out. It was late night/early morning in November. I had finally got the baby to sleep when i saw an ad for the compilation on TV.
I had been in a Beastie groove at the time anyway, and the promise of rare tracks and b-sides that weren't on my CDs had me venturing out in the cold morning to grab a copy.I hit up my local Wal Mart, completely forgetting that it was the morning after Thanksgiving.
So there I was in a Wal Mart at 5am on Black Friday, surrounded by bargain hunters out to snag the $100 pc or $50 tv ,or whatever they were offering the early birds that year.A real mob scene that caused me to spend about 15 minutes just getting to the electronics section.
I bumped into a girl i worked with.
She asked if i was there for the TV.
"Nah.I'm gettin' the new Beastie Boys CD."
I'll never forget her face as she looked at the seething crowd and at me and said
"At five in the morning? On the day after Thanksgiving?
That's stupid."
And to top it off?
they were out of the CD,so I had to get the tape.
but after braving the hysteria that is an early morning black friday sale in a small town Wal Mart,I wasn't gonna be picky,so i grabbed the tape and got out in one piece.
When i got home i walked into a squawking baby, that somehow had not woke up my wife, even though she was sleeping mere inches from the crib.
So i scooped up my baby, warmed a bottle, unwrapped my new double cassette, and listened to the whole collection while holding the boy.
now that I think about it,my whole vinyl collection is several different versions of that same story. Just about every record holds a distinct memory.
I have a thing for trying to find a vinyl version of every album i ever owned on tape or cd.
And just like with this album,I have an image, time, and place associated with all this music, and as corny as it sounds,it seems like buying the records somehow will preserve those memories even longer.
now if I give this story to my wife, hopefully she will understand why I charged up the AmEx card with Beastie Boys records,
"I still listen to wax. I'm not usin' the CD."
