Exceptional Beethoven 4th symphony

Hi,

Beethoven's Fourth Symphony is recorded in an utterly special production with London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Pierre Monteux. This is a 200-gram vinyl reissue by Classic Records. I have seen it only at http://www.acousticsounds.com

The perspective is relatively up close in an unusually relaxed and realistic tonal feast. To my mind, this is the most realistic tonal glimpse of orchestral strings and winds I have heard. Totally unhurried, unbutttoned and relaxed but with uncanny realistic timbres on all strings and winds. No hardness at all, but a rich opulent tone that is a sonic feast in splendor.

And there is a rare harmony between players, conductor and recording team! Mr. Moneux takes an unhurried tempo which allows splendorous clarity of phrases and accomodation between players for closer musical communion. For lovers of orchestral music, this is a special recording to be treasured and revisited often.

The price is going up at $65.now because the inventory is low. But what a value it is, in terms of sonic splendor and musical luminosity. A special Beethoven's Fourth Symphony, with added Leonore #3 overture, which is just as special here.
Very few recordings attain this status in my experience. Not flashy, but pure joy.

Is that a Decca recording? I have an "Eroica" by Monteux on London Treasury which is very good also.

@ d334578,

My only information is: RCA Victrola # VICS-1102, reissued by Classic Records, and available from www.acousticsounds.com with London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Pierre Monteux.

I have no other information, and thankyou for your interest. It seems that your Third Symphony would have very special status, too.

Even though this is on SACD (the set is available on a muy expensivo deluxe LP version), this new version of the Beethoven symphonies deserves to be heard.

Bauzace50,

Here's a few interesting points. The 5th is mighty powerful, and an interesting thing Jarvi found in a manuscript (see his website or google the "Beethoven Project") is the intensity of piccolos in the 4th mvmnt! Wait'll you hear it, we are almost talking band volumes. I never heard the piccolos so prominent in a performance.

Now the 9th is another jewel. Remember this is almost a chamber orchestra in size and the choir as well. But what singers?! The soloists sing in a lieder style (as opposed to operatic) that clarifies the language. And the choir sings the impossibly loud, fast, high scales written by LVB in a hard to believe manner.

BTW, sometimes the difference in CD and SACD is not always as great as you would expect. Put away all such fears in this cycle. The SACD blows away the CD layer.
