Luxman (Micro Seiki) PD277 counterweight main weight...?

Postby ggeorge » 18 Jun 2012 16:54

A friend gave me this table over the weekend, and after cleaning it up and loosening a little sticky grease at the switch arm (50 in the SM) it works great, but it's missing the main weight needed to balance the tonearm. Would anyone have any leads on where I could get one, or, alternatively, knows the specs to maybe have one machined? Thanks!

(I could also use a set of dust cover hinges.)

Is that not a weight at the rear of the arm? Are you unable to adjust the tracking weight?

Cheers,

Hi! Thank you, Alec. That is a counterweight, but only part of it; there should be a heavy ring with a set screw to establish zero balance that is separate from the tracking force fine adjustment you see. It was packed separately, per the owner's manual...

If no specs are forthcoming, you could experiment with washers on a wire loop to establish the weight necessary, and have one made to fit.

Cheers,

Thanks again! Would you say it's just a ring of solid stainless?

I do not know where the disinformation comes from, but as I have seen/heard, this Luxman-series tt or arm, has nothing to do with MS ?

Anyway, the weight (from my PD-375) is 108-110g (same arm)

If you need a counter weight in a pinch to balance the arm, or even listen to music, try a deep well 13 or 14 mm socket from your tool chest slipped over the end of the rear shaft. It's made of stainless steel and chromed just like the counter weight ring...and probably weighs about the same. If you find the right one, it will fit snugly but it does lack the ability to move in or out very far so it's not much help in fine tuning but it may let you listen to music while you search for the correct counter weight. I tried this on a Sony table and it worked surprisingly well..maybe I was just lucky.
It's worth a try and doesn't cost anything.
A dab of Blue tack will help hold the socket on, and damp it a bit to keep it from ringing.

To confuse things even more, the back end of the OP's arm looks like it could have had a similar sliding counterweight to my MR-711's MA-202L arm.

Anyway, FWIW, the specs on the MA-202L's counterweights are 40.88mm long x 17.0mm dia and the hole's dia 9.9mm. This weight (46.0g) has a machined slot for a springloaded nylon part fitted to the outer, sliding weight.

The outer, sliding weight weighs 61.2g and its dimensions are 29.76mm o/d x 15.71(L) and the hole dia is 16.98mm.

The answer to your question is - if the existing counterweight has a milled slot along its side, there would have been another sliding weight.

Hope this helps.

The original counterweight should look like this one.
Of course anything that clamps on and allows you to balance properly is good.

Right, I found it: it's 80 grams, 38mm outer diameter(~1,5"), 10mm thick, 15mm hole, + set-screw.
