new in the garrard family, need help

Postby Dr Pan K » 17 Jun 2012 12:49

hello everybody

Today i got my hands on a brand new 401, sn 14xxx. Runs quiet, strobo light works, everything seems to be perfect except ...

the 2 4000 volt caps who are loosing some oil (these must be paper or film oil caps). Though it seems fine at the moment i m afraid i ll have to replace them any time soon.

Does any one have the schematic (electronics) for the 401, or point out where i can find it ?

I believe that in the later 401's these caps were substituted by some other type, does any one have any experience on this ??

tnx in advance

so after a bit of googling around i found out that these are not ordinary caps but spark suppressors.

still, if anyone has the schematics of the circuits let me know

Hi Dr Pan

Congratulations on the Garrard.

Some time ago, a knowledgeable friend sent me a schematic, followed a few days later with some capacitors and resistors.

I still haven't used any of them but I'm sure I can forward you his mail with specific details to you.

You can either contact me directly or let me have your email address by PM.

The two parts consist of only one resistor and one capacitor per suppressor. I tried to read the values on the parts in my hand now but I think it will be better to forward my friend's mail to you.

Regards

Hi Dr Pan

I found a schematic for you, see pic. Please note the schematic is for a 301's single spark suppressor. I'm not sure if that of the 401's twin suppressors is the same. My friend has also sent me detailed instructions how to build the replacement components into the original black box.

Hope this helps. Be very careful as you are working with ac current. I'm not sure of your domestic current. Ours is 220Vac 50Hz and I'm not sure if the component ratings will stay similar if you have 110Vac 60Hz.

Regards

tnx andre.

the 301 is a bit different, mine (401 sn 14xxx) is 4kv .05 μF 200 Ohm.

i came up some ebayers selling these so i wont have to reconstruct them. I was looking for the schematic just to have it under hand as with these "nos" turntables it might come handy...

ps: i ve seen yours somewhere on the net, beautiful blue finish in multi layer construction with external spikes. u still got it ? u think it matches with a specific kind of cart and tonearm ?

Yeah, I still have it. Made a very long time ago. I think the old gal must be in her 20's by now

Well, tradition calls for an SME 3012/MKIV/MKV but these are getting pricey.

New, I would go for a nice Jelco and used vintage - for a Micro MA-505? I am a bit of a Micro enthusiast. Their arms are precision-made, long lasting without issues and the look da biz.

VE member Jan Snegov sometimes has them FS.

Enjoy the 401.

Cheers

on my main TT i have an sme s2 imp with det hs and i play with some fine MMs, among others 2 v15 III, one original the other fitted with jico.

so for this one i was thinking of going "heavy". jelco 12 inch is one option and if thats the case maybe an 103R would follow, though i have a mm only phono (tube diy)

im also in love with micro but not so sure if i can trust em through ebay, especially at those prices..

tbh i would like to use a saec, but the price issue and condition is again a problem.

the big question is: does garrard work better with MC or MM...??

Hello Dr Pan

Well, let's put it this way (no doubt wiser counsel will also contribute) - I played a succession of good MM cartridges on the 301 for years and was quite happy.

In those years I had regular Italian friends quite often at my home and they were all very experienced vinylists. Between them, they used Linn, TD124 and Micro Seiki turntables and all of them used similar, good quality MM and MI cartridges like AT, AKG and Grace.

One day, I acquired an almost new Supex SD900 Super and a Nagatron HA-9000 step up device.

A few days later, we arranged another get-together and the difference and comments from my friends were most favourable and enthusiastic - in fact our musicmaking went on until 5am.

I'm not trying to indicate MM or MC as both have merits. I would say first decide if you want MM, MC or MI and then match the compliance of your cartridge choice to the arm which suits your budget.

Garrards are not fussy and a wide variety of arms will work. Right now, I have three 301's set up. One uses a spindly Grace 727, another an EMT arm and the 3rd has a Micro arm fitted.

There's a 401 plinth being built right now by VE member alternativeroute. See here http://www.avforums.co.za. Look for the vinyl and tube board.

i think i decided how the build will proceed, though some details must be clarified

1) birch plywood, secondary material tbd, metal rods and internal damping
2) metal spikes, high gloss black finish
3) made an offer for a saec, if not will look towards jelco 12 inch
4) 103R as a future buy cart + SUT, probably "cheap" denon 300 or DIY SUT with lundahl

this is it for now..

So, after 6 months this is it.

White lacquer baltic birtch plywood with dedicated stand, SAEC 308L tonearm and Denon 103R (waiting for the step up to be finalized, purchased cinemag "blue").

still a work in progress as the tonearms base is designed and under CNC construction. a second tonearm is on the way..

Very nice! my long drawn out project is nearing completion, with plinth booked in to be sprayed in the next couple of weeks. 12" Jelco arm and Yannis lead waiting and Nagaoka MP-200 ordered, can't wait, it's been dragging on since July ](*,)

Sounds excellent Mike! Jelco 12 inch was my primary option (if it wasnt for the SAEC which i bought in prague from a known member).

6 months for a complete project is in the norm i believe. besides, whats the fun if it only lasts a few weeks ?

i am waiting for the second tonearm to arrive.. bought an Audio Technica 1100 straight, other option is my SME 3009 SII imp.
