Which Pioneer or Kenwood receiver/amplifier?

Postby HighPowered » 16 Jun 2012 02:42

I've recently come across a couple vintage amplifiers and receivers while browsing my local record store.

Receivers:
Pioneer SX-1000TW
Pioneer SX-3600

Amplifiers:
Pioneer SA-5500 II
Kenwood KA-6100

Both these amplifiers and receivers are priced within the $60-65 range. I might lean towards choosing from the amplifiers as I most likely will not use the tuner on the receiver. Which one should I buy?

My current audio set up:
Technics SL-D202 Turntable (w/ a Red Ed conical)
JVC RX-212 Receiver
Pair of Polk bookshelf speakers (do not know the model #)
Pair of Bose Model 141 speakers

Just had a good look on Google and most those amps are pretty anemic with their output power. Of the lot my choice would be the Kenwood KA-6100 with 50W per channel, if you can find one the Kenwood KA-7100 can be had for similar money and is quite highly thought of.

Hi

I concur with 13oots2.

Also look out for a Kenwood KA-701 rated at 85W/channel.

Yes, I did a little thorough research myself (specifically on audiokarma). And it looks like there are great things to be said about the KA-6100.

I also saw a listing of the KA-701, the person is asking about $30 for it. Even though it is functional and all the switches work, the tips of some of the switches are missing. With that said, I might be leaning towards purchasing the KA-6100 (it has been refurbished anyway).

I finally found out what model my Polk speakers are, they are R15s, so they should be compatible with the KA-6100.

Thank you guys for your input.

The Kenwood KA 6100 is a very nice amplifier. Used to own one. Wish I still had it.

Despite what I typed in the previous post, I decided to go with the Kenwood KA-701 which Blue Angel suggested. Aside from some cosmetic issues, the switches are broken off but still function. After dusting off the inside of the amplifier and adjusting the DC Offset & Bias, it sounds like a beauty. I like it a lot so far. Definitely more balanced sound than the JVC receiver.
