MMF 7.1 Platter & mat

Postby todd95008 » 11 Jun 2012 21:11

I have a new mmf 7.1 and the stock mat was pretty much a joke.
It was a thin piece of felt and I say was because it went in the trash the first day. The platter underneath is 1" thick solid acrylic but does not have a depression machined out for the record label. This does seem to hold the record firmly when the supplied clamp is used but I wonder if there is a better way or if someone has used a different/better mat with this TT ?

Thanks
Todd

P.S. Anyone know what version of Project TT Music Hall got this platter from (I don't see anything similar from Pro-ject's current designs)?

Try making a leather mat. Thin, soft, easy to cut,it should cost you about $5.

Cheers,
Alec

I bought the music hall cork mat. It was pricey, but does the job. I like having the record semi suspended so the dust isn't pushed into the grooves. Makes cleaning easier...lol
When I read reviews, they said that it added bass, especially in the low end. I didn't hear that at all, but I don't care, thats not why I bought it...
Too much to list, I sell the stuff, so most of it was free (the only way I can afford my addiction)!

I too bought the Music Hall Cork mat. I did not hear any musical upgrade but thats not why I purchased it either. The mat it came with was just junk. The MH mat works good and it looks good.

Yes the std. mat is a throw away.
I have been using the bare platter which should sound good since it is made from acrylic.
From what I have read this is one of the best materials to interface with the record (used on many higer end TT's).
Only issue is that there is no depression machined into the platter for the record label.

If I change I think it will be the 3mm funk mat.
I also have a 2mm thick silicone mat (SRM tech I think) that I will try.
Still don't know where/what Pro-ject table this platter is from ???

Although they come from the same factory, MH are not always direct copies of Pro-ject and vice-versa. You will find that some ideas and features are unique giving MH it's own identity.

I believe that only the base/plinth is different. I'm sure there's more, but they seem to share everything from arms to belts and motors... This is just a slightly educated guess...

Make your own cork mat....I started with a 12" round mat with hardboard backer from Lowe's. All you have to do is drill the spindle hole. But I found these did not lay flat, so I switched to 5-4" round cork mats to give me that floating effect....Much better and did hear a bit better bass.

Looks like hamburger buns... Good idea though, I'm sure it works well.
